Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay praises fight of his team after draw

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay insisted Rudy Gestede’s last-gasp point saver was reward for “fighting to the end.”

“He won every ball, caused problems for Leicester and took his goal well,” said Mackay in paying tribute to the 24-year-old.

“Our equaliser was reward for the way we kept fighting to the end.”

“The players deserved a draw,” insisted Mackay. “We could have scored before as Peter Whittingham flashed a shot just wide and Fraizer Campbell just failed to get his toe to a cross.

“Leicester have a squad rated one of the best in the Championship.

“They packed midfield, got players behind the ball and we had to stay patient. This was a match against one of the leading teams in the Championship and we came out with a hard fought draw.”

Mackay revealed he had decided against starting with fit-again Craig Bellamy, saying: “He is just back from a knock and we just needed to protect him a little.

“We were without Ben Turner after he rolled an ankle in training and Mark Hudson had to come at half-time.”

Malky
"To get a goal is relief when you are a goal down with a few minutes to go. But it was just reward for the way the team kept fighting to the end. We had a never-say-die attitude to knocking on the door.

"There are no givens in this division and I don't expect any between now and the end of the season. You only need to look at the results in other areas to see that everyone is cutting each others' throats. It's a dangerous division.

"But what pleases me about my team is they fight to the very end no matter what. We're still picking up points. You've got to work for every point and we've added another towards our total with one game less."

Nigel Pearson

Gestede's goal left Leicester boss Nigel Pearson a frustrated figure.
Pearson said: "We deserved to win the game as we were much the better side.

"It was a bit cruel on the players bearing in mind how late it was. This is never an easy place to come to and a bit of confidence has been lacking. But I thought we played very well.

"We know that our points tally of late has not been good enough and we've fallen off the pace. I just feel for the players.

"I can't remember Cardiff really creating a chance until the goal. It was fatigue, but that happens. I'm not going to get too downbeat about it. You've got to work your way and show courage through difficult periods. The players did that."

Both central defenders are rated doubtful for the trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Cardiff City needed a late, late show to deny fellow promotion contenders Leicester victory as French substitute Gestede headed home from Andrew Taylor’s cross in the third minute of injury time.
City have only won once in their last five games but have now rescued points with late equalisers in their last two games. Gestede’s third goal of the season sent Cardiff four points clear of closest challengers Hull with a game in hand.

DOESNT he say the same things nearly every game lately

He recognised that they packed midfield yet was happy to see Whitts and gunner overrun. Bizarre. If he doesn't change it or react during games then we are play off bound

What baffles me is the report before Millwall home saying he wanted to start quickly out the races? Why not every game?

“Our equaliser was reward for the way we kept fighting to the end.”

Should be worded "Our equaliser was reward for the way we fought in added time after being clueless and bottleless in the previous 90 minutes"

Malky obviously went to the good old school of football managers where they teach them the same old quotes to spin out every week.

Winning promotion is like a marathon they say and top marathon runners say that the real race in a marathon usually starts at the 20 mile stage. Well for the last few seasons City have aways failed at the 20 mile stage and one of the main constants in that failure has been a certain Peter Whitingham. Every season he fails at the 20 mile stage and this season is no different.

He is over rated, has no fight or leadership qualities and when the going gets tough he hides.

He should get a job as a spin doctor at 10 Downing Street.

How on earth are people getting injured in training at this stage of the season?

All the more reason for the owners to sort out this new training complex. We hear all about 'sports science' and all that lark, nobody should get injured in training in this day and age. Get some more pitches. Or come back to 'dogshit' park :ayatollah:

Must admit, never been down the Vale. Will have to have a look sometime.
