Ben Nugent, Adam Matthews, Aaron Wildig, Joe Ralls, Rambo...

Mon Mar 11, 2013 9:17 pm

Ben Nugent, Adam Mathews, Aaron Ramsey, Aaron Wildig, Aaron Morris, Joe Ralls and a former 100m sprint champion whose name is killing me but was a striker tipped for great things under Dave Jones.

I remember watching each of these making their debut (whether competitive or a friendly) and from time to time we see great young players coming through at our club. I can't help but think Wildig and Morris in particular were let down and could have made it if given the chance (before you tell me that they're both fringe players lower down the division, ask yourself whether they'd still be if they were given first team experience and the chance to be developed around higher standard players)

For me however, Ramsey and Matthews really shone as fantastic players early on in their careers - so composed on the ball.

My question is - has Ralls fallen into the Wildig zone? Is Nugent going to follow Rambo and Matthews?

I remember feeling extremely optimistic for Wildig after the Chelsea game, so it's frustrating to see players who fall so far despite almost looking good enough.

Secondly - I'm a qualified coach and have been fortunate enough to meet Dick Bate on a coaching course a few years back. We've got one of the best youth coaches in the country in him - will do a fantastic job. I met a coach called Peter Amos a while back who has worked with Hodgson, Rodgers, Pullis (the lot) and says there's a lot of envy that Cardiff got their hands on Bate ("a huge loss to the FA").

While we're at caring about youth football and producing local talent - sign this - https://t.co/wA9pToU4R2 - a petition to get the Premier League clubs to put a little more money into grass roots footy - they only contribute around 1% of broadcasting money to grassroots - should be closer to 7.5%

But back to the questions - Nugent and Ralls... and who's next?

Yeh, last time I heard - he was doing 'OK' but certainly nowhere near being one of their stand out players. He'll have a career in football though, which I guess is the bigger picture. But could have been at a much higher level from what we've all seen on match days

Joe Magennis was the sprinter I think.

The sprinter was Jon Brown, a promising young lad from Bridgend, I had him to present trophies at an end of season do. :ayatollah:

Nah it wasn't him. I've just been told it was Jon Brown - who was in my opinion over hyped as a future championship striker.

Just checked him out on Wikipedia

"Brown also competed in various sports including rugby and athletics and was Welsh 100m champion at the 12–14 age group after taking part in the Welsh games."

"Brown was originally spotted by Liverpool scout Gwyn James but was unable to sign for the Merseyside club, due to a rule meaning youth players must sign with a team within one and a half hours of their home, so he recommended him to Cardiff City"

He now plays in the Thai Division 1 League. After playing for Wales U21 and being tipped for great things, thats a huge shame

Josh Magennis and no, he used to be a goalkeeper and then became a striker, he was never a sprinter.

I think Nugent will go on to do well for us, I think he has some raw potential and considering his lack of senior matches has coped very well in the games he has played

I heard a lot of people that sit by me slagging him off after the derby game and I thought it was uncalled for, he played well I thought he did make a few mistakes but for a young lad who has played less than 10 league games I thought he was impressive

I think he will so well and people should give him a chance

It has happened for years. I can remember Lee Jarman being tipped for big things and a stadium full of scouts turning up after he was named in a Welsh Squad. Not long after that Lee Phillips was the next big thing and then disappeared.

I think both ended up in non-league with Newport or Wrexham or even the Welsh Premier Division.

Sorry lads, but I think you're all wrong. The player he's on about is Fleetwood(Stuart,I think).I remember him playing for
the first team and he went off with a foot injury and we never saw him again.

Agree. He looked nervous and unsure of himself. But that could have been because he seemed stranded at times, on his own one against one. Hopefully Hudson's return will sort him out.

Ralls I think is a great player.

He will find it hard to get even on the bench but MM will continue to work with him.

He had 8 scouts at the Palace first leg looking at him. Spurs, Liverpool, etc.
