Former Cardiff City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has upped the promotion ante on his old club by warning: “My Leicester team can still catch you.”
Schmeichel, who made 14 appearances for the Bluebirds during a loan spell from Manchester City in 2007-08, comes to Cardiff City Stadium for Tuesday night’s huge clash with the Foxes.
And he is adamant fifth-placed Leicester still have what it takes to clinch automatic promotion during the last quarter of the Championship season.
Nigel Pearson’s men are currently 13 points behind the Bluebirds, but they reckon they can get the deficit down to seven by beating Sheffield Wednesday today and then the Bluebirds on Tuesday.
Schmeichel reckons wins in those two would fire up Leicester’s bid for a top two finish and ease the pressure on manager Pearson, whose team have managed only one win in their last six League matches.
Schmeichel’s ‘we can go up’ message comes hot on the heels of Crystal Palace striker Kevin Phillips yesterday declaring the Eagles also reckon they can haul in Cardiff.
Watford and Hull also fancy their chances of a top two finish.
Schmeichel said: “We have the players to earn the wins which can still close in on the teams above us, including Cardiff.
“We are in a decent position and teams above us might be under pressure to keep their spots there. Maybe that can work to our advantage.
“I am hoping we can make a surge, but it is an unpredictable league. We hope some of those teams drop points. We are playing some of those teams, including Cardiff next Tuesday, so we can take points off them.
“There is still everything to play for. We have a game in hand on some of the teams above us.
“I would say don’t write us off yet. That’s for sure. The quality we have here means we are still in with a very good shout.”
Leicester looked to be heading towards a disappointing defeat against Leeds at home in midweek until Michael Keane popped up with an equaliser in the fourth minute of injury time.
“Who knows, perhaps that equaliser could be the turning point,” says Schmeichel.

Kasper needs to learn to keep his mouth shut. Before the 1st game vs Leicester this season he told the paper "He wouldn't concede" and look what happened there.

Not worried about them now tbh, and if we beat them Tuesday there ain't no way they'll overhaul us. It's 2 from 4 now for me. We are still in pole position too

Pressure on Leicester now, draw or lose on Tuesday and they could still 13 points behind us, played a game more and only 9 games left!

Even if they beat us 6-0 on Tuesday they won't catch us, playoffs at best for them which I must confess I'm amazed at.
When they signed Wood and he started scoring for fun I thought they were heading for Prem, they still might get there but it will take you 3 extra games Kasper
