The wife and I are watching The Walking Dead at the moment. Season 1 focused on character building but it has all kicked off in Season 2. Currently on Season 3.
Cannot wait for Game of Thrones to start. From what I remember of the books, this is where the shit all goes down as well so it could be a massive season. I struggled to get into The Wire but I was watching about 3-4 other series at the time so might just bosh it out when I've stopped watching the ones I am at the moment.
Other series I've enjoyed include...
Breaking Bad
Boardwalk Empire
Friday Night Lights
Falling Skies
Jericho
The Following
I have also got Vegas lined up on Sky +. No idea what that will be like but looks decent enough.

For me The Wire is the best show I've ever watched, so much detail has gone into it and the majority is based on a true stories that david Simon & Ed Burns encountered whilst living in baltimmore.
Breakng bad
Sons of Anarchy
Sopranos
Walking Dead
Oz
are also decent.........

The Following on Sky Atlantic. Amazing!!! Blows me away every week as to how they manage to ramp it up every time.

Also really liked hell on wheels. Vegas is warming up nice on number 6 an all.

This new one coming on called Revolution looks pretty tasty as well. Anyone know anything about it?

I highly recommend the Sopranos. Best I have ever watched. Great acting/acting. I struggled to get into the Wire. I watched seven episodes of the first series and they were very samey. Completely struggled with the accent as well. Kept on having to rewind time and time again to hear what they were saying. Prison Break is good but faded away in its third and fourth season. Boardwalk Empire/Game Of Thrones/Walking Dead all good as is Spartacus for light hearted easy viewing.

Dexter
The Walking Dead are my current faves.
I miss Spooks and Strike Back.

The Wire is critically acclaimed to the max. It's an excellent series and the creators have balls.
The Shield though.... Absolutely flawless... Whoever made this had balls and it shows. f**k your feelings this series is something else.
I was massively surprised to find this series was brilliant. The Shield is great until the end.
Watch The Shield fucko.

I've watched the Wire 4-5 times and each time I pick up something different. So much detail has gone into it, even the minor stuff. I would say Season 4 is fav, but love each. Season 3 is quality too with 'Hamerstam'..Actually there all quality...

The Wire, Sons of Anarchy, Lost, Deadwood are all worth the money to watch them.
'Its always Sunny in Philadelphia' is the best though. Funniest programme ever made
