What type of food do you like?

If your looking for something a bit smart then the custom house down penarth is quality but costly.

Potted pig on Mary street is nice, also 'the corner house' (which is the old gay bar on the corner of mill lane and chippy alley)

Oscars in Romilly Road was nice, went there a couple of weeks ago for our wedding anniversary.

My personal favourite is Woods Brasserie in the Bay.

I've taken several dilletante business customers there and have not been dissapointed yet. Eaten there maybe 10 or 12 times
in total. They use a lot of local ingredients too which is always a bonus. Check out their current menu on the website

Both of those excellent plus Bullys in Canton :thumbright:

Scallini's in wedal Road. Do not be put off by the exterior, the food is absolutely of the highest quality but it is a bit more expensive than the custom house, oscars etc.

This one's for real scililian food lovers.

Restaurant Minuet in the Castle Arcade.

Best Italian for miles, really good value, and #1 on Tripadvisor I think.

Potted Pig on St Mary's Street also top quality. Pay for what you get.

Woods brasserie is for people who like to think they know good food, but don't. It's all very pretty but the food is not to the standard it should be. They try to be clever and fail - but as it's presented nicely and a bit costly people assume it's good.

The best restraunt I've been to is The Maen Llwyd in Caerphilly, rustic but full of flavour and fresh, local, seasonal produce. Unfortunately it has now been sold to a chain and has been completely ruined.

For a steak house then Miller and Carter is excellent, for Indian cuisine then it's Purple poppadom and I'm yet to experience a good fine dining restraunt in and around the Cardiff area.

But I will certainly have another look when I'm back in the country.

I like Le Monde at the bottom od St Mary Street, it is similar to the Custom House (Is or was the same owner I believe)
Also Ceasars is good, and the Chapel, A new place at the bottom end of Churchill Way is gaining a good rep.
There is also a french cafe restaurant on the first floor down the bay above the american diner. The Chateau Brillant is excellent.
None of those are cheap.

I totally disagree Mr Paxman (always wanted to say that)
I've eaten in thousands of high end restaurants around the world as part of my job. That's why I'm 3 stone overweight!
Woods is not a show pony - the food is to a very high standard, or has been every time I have visited. Definitely not clever for clever's sake, but very tasty and well balanced and interesting flavours. But of course you are welcome to you opinion.
I've been to the Maen Llwyd several times as well, and think that it is quite good, but not in the same league as Woods.

Yeah there is a connection between Le Monde and Custom House but think it was a previous connection rather than present.

Whilst I love Custom House I also like Peir 64 which is right nearby. The Olive tree and Fig Tree (both Penarth restaurants) are also very high on my list of favourites.

I too, have been fortunate enough due to my previous career to have travelled around Europe and also visiting family abroad which enables me to experience top restaurants around the world

I've also been to the Maen Llwyd and preferred it when it was more of a country pub atmosphere personally.
