Tan dont need to change the name to get his way

Mon Mar 04, 2013 12:20 am

If the bluebird is removed from the badge in the summer and our badge has the dragon as the prominent feature on it then the media will call us the dragons by default anyway. Why would they continue to call us the bluebirds? There is no reason whatsoever. Tan will also most likely state that he wants us to be called the dragons to the media and make sure they fully know well of the changes as they have cocked up on the odd occasion this year and used our old badge, used the wrong nickname, etc.

He'll get what he wants by default without changing the name. The only people who'll continue to call us the bluebirds are the ones who cling on to traditions and were active during those times. Kids will call the team the dragons and other British fans will also. It will become the norm for the next generations.

Think about it, we are Cardiff City now but how many of you call us the bluebirds? Plenty I assume. It just happened because its our nickname, it became the norm and fell into place. The same will eventually happen with the dragons. On the national and global stage we will be known as 'Cardiff City - The Dragons' so a name change is not a real concern of Tan as he can still put the dragon stamp on the club by changing the nickname and ridding the club of the bluebird emblem.

We'll have fans in the stadium chanting bluebirds still but the bluebirds will only be known within the confinements of our own stadium. Everyone else will know us as Cardiff City The Dragons.

If we get to the premier and us fans continue to shout Bluebirds i would imagine the media would pick up on this and make it news.

Media love nothing more than a controversy.

Any club's badge doesn't always determine the club's nickname. If they remove the Bluebird from our badge, we'll still be called the Bluebirds. Nothing will stop us from chanting the Bluebirds.

I'm pretty sure the media don't call Watford the "Mooses". They're called the Hornets but there's no hornet on their badge.

They have on some occasions this season already called us The Dragons. If it becomes official and Tan states that it is now the official nickname of the club with a dragon as the main emblem then the media will use it or 'the former Bluebirds' or something along those lines.

But if it's not 'official' then the media will carry on calling us the Bluebirds. Proper journalists make sure they don't make mistakes in their reports. They've called us the Dragons on 2 or 3 occasions mistakenly, yeah, but 99% of the time the media refer to us as the Bluebirds. It doesn't take a badge for the media to know a club's nickname.

Wait until the nationals get a whiff of unease from the fans. Any of the self righteous Sunday journalists will love the conflict between old romantic names and British traditions of the past being ripped apart by overseas investors looking to make a quick buck and not understanding what they are doing.

Club can try to enforce name change if they so wish.

Remember Newcastle banning journos that tried to continue to call "St. James Park" by it's proper name after it was rebranded?

Club could do similar - as soon as the media start calling us the Dragons, everyone will.

Will Always be the Bluebirds to me, and to my generation.
Im sure we will hear "Bluebirds" and "Blue Army" ringing out at the stadium for years. Well, I hope so.
But I agree, theres lots more to come from Mr Tan and his ideas to change everything.

We will always be the Bluebirds, and not that I think he will, but if he should try to eradicate the name, he'll find out we will use it, shout it sing and chant it at every opportunity we get.

We accepted the rebrand, but we don't accept being told to do something, big difference. :old:

So presumably you would support a hypothetical peaceful protest that involved handing out blue scarves with 'Bluebirds' written on them or something similar?

for my sins I spent best part of 20 years living in Bristol - luckily for me I was married into a Rovers family rather than a City one. Years ago most people who moved to Bristol (rather than were brought up there) supported City, who were considered to be the richer of the two clubs and the more successful.

Rovers have a pirate on their badge, and are officially referred to as 'the Pirates' - that said, most fans refer to them as 'the Gas', their original stadium at Eastville being near a gas works.

The faithful sing a song about 'Goodnight Irene' - was lucky enough to have taken my nipper to several matches, sometimes this was sung when they were winning or had just scored, memorably for me it was sung immediately after conceding a comedy goal at home against Carlisle when the standard of football was absolutely dire :o

The long-winded point I think I'm trying to make is this - no one I knew in my ex-wife's very large family, or circle of frieinds at a local football club, referred to Rovers as The Pirates - they all referred to them as The Gas. Everyone knew the song and sung it with gusto. None of these were official club emblems or initiatives.

I am taking the long view on all this hooha - at some point ownership will change. I am making my views and wishes known to the Trust and in time the Supporter's Club. As cathartic as it is ranting on here, I don't beleive it means a thing to the owner I'm afraid.

Spot on. I can see a few journalists making sure they call us The Dragons just to get under our skin. Articles about how we sold out for the Premier League dream will be rife to fill their papers.

Spot on. Only us Cardiff fans will call us bluebirds. Any further out and we'll be known as the Dragons so whilst in our bubble the bluebird will live on, it will not be known elsewhere. The Dragons will be plastered everywhere and therefore Tan gets his way. This is why its important the bluebird remains.

How many of you know, without googling, what Crystal Palace's nickname was before the eagles?

Doubt many of you know, and how many of you still refer to Palace as the "Glaziers"? Similar numbers will refer to us as the bluebirds in years to come.
