Don't understand this point. Most clubs refer to their team by their nicknames regardless of being home or away. Do Liverpool stop becoming the reds because they are away from home?

No it doesn't, but Liverpool do actually play in the colour they purport to be at home.
The Magpies = black and white
The Reds (liverpool) = Red
The Blues (Chelsea/Birmingham) = Blue
There's a pattern forming there...
until you get to cardiff
The Bluebirds = Red

I don't know about you, but I have never seen a red and blue eagle, an orange wolf, a blue and white owl etc

The bluebird hasn't changed colour the kit has.

I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule.
The Black Cats, maybe. Sunderland play in red and white stripes. Probably are more if you can be arsed to look.
