It shouldn't matter howmuch you earn more like what your council should and shouldn't be spending your money on!!!! Every councilhas at least £3 million in reserves yet they don't tell the public that

Luxury bloody luxury...

You should try Copenhagen mate. I'm not sure exactly how they split the tax as "poll tax" is included in income tax and depends on which municipality you live, I pay 39% now but did pay 41%, 2% drop for moving closer to the city centre strangely enough. On top of that I pay 5 or 6% "labour contribution" for the unemployable and 9% state pension contributions although that is ring fenced and belongs to the individual. They do tax the it at the same rates on retirement though.

If you own your own property then it gets quite complicated, the tax liability is the assessed rental value of said crib less the mortgage interest rate at the time any mortgage was taken out. Then tax payable (and pension contributions I think but not 100% sure on that) is taken at the same rates as above.

The current government, left of centre here but probably equivalent to the UK Socialist lot (not sure what they call themsleves these days) have recently or are about to massively reduce the payments given to the those who've been unemployed for more than 3 years, I think. Difficult to say as I don't understand Danish very well and they seem to change things on a weekly basis.

Anyway I digress, it effectively means that a working person in Denmark is taxed at around 50 - 60% unless they're married (and tell SKAT), have kids (ditto SKAT) and literally hundreds of other bit of info, how far you live from workplace for example. It is an insanely complicated system that no one appears to understand fully. However, the streets are clean, rubbish is collected on a near daily basis, the first sign of snow and the gritters are out everywhere, any problems with local municipality is sorted quickly and efficiently. The facilities for young and old are excellent, free education and students still get "grants" although the gov are about to take away the five year 2800 kr (about 300 quid) monthly allowance for "non productive" courses.

High taxes but the local authorities are shit hot here and spend the taxes where they should be spent. I lived in Wandsworth for near on 23 years and they were pretty good even under the days of labour but even they can't compare to here.

I could go on but to be honest I can't be arsed, you were a local councilor once, you know how difficult it would be to change the mindset of the general person in the street. As for Welsh independence from England...

When I lived in Vietnam (going back 13 years ago now) they were being taxed 90% of their income hense why alot of it was cash in hand but were the happiest race Ive ever met.

Haven't lived in Wales since the mid eighties and most were happy with cash in hand myself included. Keeps the money out of the hands of the gary glitteratti or zionists as they quite quaintly refer to them on the "odd" board..

went to Copenhagen in '98 and was my first Welsh away game. Bellamy scored in a 1-0 and had a great time in a great city.
