Premier League ready to fight sponsors over renaming clubs

21/04/11 By Martin Lipton

Premier League bosses last night dismissed fears that top flight clubs could be renamed after their sponsors.

La Liga outfit Getafe, sixth behind Barcelona last term and who are the third club in Madrid, will be known as Getafe Team Dubai after an £80million takeover by the Royal Emirates investment firm headed by Sheikh Butti Bin Suhail Al Maktoum, a member of the ruling family.

Similar club name changes have taken place in Austria - Red Bull Salzburg - and Germany, where the energy drink firm also only the renamed RB Leipzig, who play in the 40,000-capacity stadium paid for through German government funds for the 2006 World Cup.

A number of clubs in the League of Wales have taken their sponsors’ name, including the former TNS Solutions - once Llansantffraid FC but now simply The New Saints - and Airbus UK, historically the works side of the aerospace factory in Broughton.

But while most new-build stadiums in England have seen naming rights sold, no club in a major league has taken the ultimate step before the news from Spain.

Premier League rules do not proscribe team name changes, although that may be addressed in the future but it is not allowed under FA regulations, which state: “A club competing in the Premier League (and other leagues) shall not be permitted to change its playing name without the prior written permission of the FA Council.”

In any event, it is understood that League chief executive Richard Scudamore would be fervently opposed to such a move by any of his member clubs.

A Premier League source said: “We just don’t believe it would be culturally acceptable in England. The value of the clubs comes from their heritage. It is highly unlikely that this could happen here.”

Surely this also dispells fears of a CCFC name change?

1) It says the FA doesn't proscribe name changes meaning they can happen. It is highly unlikely but not impossible.

2) The overuse of England is a worry. Is this language used purposely because it would be the FAW's decision for us?

3) What factors are taken into consideration when a name change is put forward? If Tan says i'm leaving if it doesn't happen will they just give in to him? The alternative to his money being pumped into the club is us struggling massively financially and it would once again leave a smear on British football, something they will most likely want to avoid at all costs.

Nice bit of scaremongering though ;)

Cardiff team malaysia. Promotion or no promotion that would be the end of me. Don't think they would take it that far imo.
It's good to see foreign investors coming in to save clubs but it's awful to see them get rid of the heritage and traditions of football clubs.

How, just reporting on news that has happened in world football?

You can't deny, with the rebranding bollocks, this wouldn't have passed Tan's mind at all.

This scaremongering bollocks is laughable. These are things that need to be discussed and the Trust need to wake up to these issues before the rest of our traditions go. Questions need to be asked.

After the game vs WHU the news broke on the rebrand. People came out and said 'that's just a rumour, thats nonsense, don't believe that'. Then when the news dropped no one was prepared for it at all. Everyone went into a state of shock and disbelief. Tan had us on the ropes ready to deliver the knock out blow.

The thing fans thought would never ever happen to their club happened and thats fact. This attitude of 'Tan won't do that' or 'It'll never happen to Cardiff' is a load of shite. He has already done what he wants and at will because he knows how to play his customer base.

Carry on with the attitude if you want but when he makes the changes it'll be too late. Go into another state of shock and anger but it won't matter because the damage will already be done. Tan will be laughing. Stop the crime happening, don't mop up the blood when its already been spilt.

You don't act that way with your cars surely? 'Oh I'll never be in a crash anyway, sod insurance'. No you don't. You protect yourself and your vehicle. Why not preplan to protect your clubs identity as well?

because if you look at the time the article was written it was written in 2011 and since then the club is still called Getafe and not Getafe Team Dubai, if you read things properly you would have noticed that.

not really whats worrying is people appear to be able to buy a football club and not realise the club you are buying isnt a franchise unlike franchise brands like american football. Also you have red bull salzburg that sets one hell of a precedent for putting your brand name as part of the club name. However the Football League, FA and the Premier League have made sure names cannot change especially after the AFC Wimbledon/MK Dons issue

The truth is if enough money is forthcoming then clubs will vote for it, end of. The old world of football died many years ago, finished off by Sky. Either go with it or get out is the only answer. I can certainly see us becoming Cardiff City Malaysia in the Far East soon, and is it really a bad thing if it gives millions out there a British club to support, if it means more money in the coffers. To me the old Cardiff City died when Sam Hamman came along with plans for a new ground, changed the badge and dragged us into the modern football era. You either move forward or struggle in today's world it's as simple as that, make your choice go along with it or leave it behind but don't expect those that put in the money to change to your thinking it just don't happen in today's world.
