'Nazi mob' attack Spurs fans in Lyon bar ahead of Europa League clash

By LAURA WILLIAMSON
21st February 2013

Tottenham fans were allegedly targeted by masked thugs making Nazi salutes ahead of the club's Europa League tie in Lyon, France, on Wednesday night.
Eye witnesses told of their fear as fans inside the Smoking Dog pub in the city's old town experienced two waves of attacks on Wednesday night.
Flares and heavy objects, such as iron table stands, were thrown at the windows of the pub, causing the glass to shatter and Tottenham fans to run for cover.
Many recalled the horrifying events of last November in Rome, when two Spurs fans were stabbed in an apparently anti-Semitic attack.

Scene: The Smoking Dog Pub in Lyon where around 150 Tottenham fans were attacked by the mob

Sportsmail understands three people were taken to hospital on Wednesday, one suffering from a severe blow to the head. Police were called and representatives from the British police, the FA and Spurs own security team were also present.
An eye witness, who did not wish to be named, told Sportsmail: 'There were 50 people in the first wave and 25 in the second. It's a pretty scary thing when you're confronted by people doing Nazi salutes.
'A lit flare was thrown through the window as well as the heavy weight, the kind that's used on terraces to hold down umbrellas. It was terrifying. I've never seen anything like it. They threw iron stools through the windows as well.
'It wasn't football fans. There were old women in here drinking G&Ts. We had to get them behind the wall out of the way. There were three people taken to hospital.'
Tottenham supporter Christian Radnedge said the attack prompted painful memories of what happened in Rome last year. Spurs fan Ashley Mills was stabbed in a Nazi thug attack when his side played Lazio in November.
Mr Radnedge said: 'They came in at around half past 10. There were lots of Spurs fans in the pub. It was fit to burst.
'Then around 20 masked men came towards the pub. The glass was smashed, missiles were thrown into the pub.
'The owner of the pub said there were 25 of them. They came in making Nazi salutes. It was frightening.
'Rome was fresh in everyone's minds. No-one tried to fight back but everyone realised this was serious.
'They left and then we thought that was it, but five minutes later it started again. More stuff was thrown in through the windows and then they left.
'The intruders did not get in to the bar because it was full of Spurs fans. There were drips of blood left in the bar. The owners barricaded the pub between the two waves of attacks.'
Dave Eales, 42, the landlord and owner of the Smoking Dog pub since 1995, said he had warned police Tottenham fans could be targeted by right-wing groups because of the club's rich Jewish heritage.
He added: 'At 10.18 the pub was rammed with Tottenham fans watching the Champions League. The front of the pub, which is made up of re-inforced glass, was attacked by 20 to 25 people. They threw projectiles through the windows. They threw terrace chairs, objects... anything they could have got their hands on.

It's happened before: Tottenham fans were attacked by Lazio and Roma fans in November fans last year
'There was a stand off. Then they came back a second time and it all started again.
'There were three injured Tottenham fans taken away by ambulance. Police came, but not in a rapid time.
'The most disappointing thing is that I spoke to the police a couple of days ago about the potential for trouble because this of what people associate Tottenham being (a club with a strong Jewish heritage). I told the police this, but tonight it didn't happen.
'One guy had a bad head injury. They came with objects. It's a shame. It's disappointing.
'I was at the game last week (at White Hart Lane. This was nothing to do with Tottenham. I support Lyon.
'It could have been a lot worse. This has never happened in 20 years. I love football, but I will shut the pub on Thursday.'
Spurs fan James Taylor, 22, from Ilford, arrived in Lyon on Wednesday after driving down from Paris, where he and his friends had stayed the previous night.

Scoring blues: Adebayor has failed to recreate the form of his loan move from Manchester City last season

Last man standing: Adebayor is Andre Villas Boas' only fit striker after Jermain Defoe picked up an ankle injury
Mr Taylor also described two waves of violence and said 'he had never seen anything like it', despite following Tottenham throughout Europe in recent seasons.
He added: 'We were in the pub having a few drinks at about 10 o'clock at night. There were about 150 Spurs fans singing. It was all in good nature.
'Then there was a bang. We ignored the first one and there was a second one, suddenly. The windows were smashed and stool were thrown into the pub. We ran back to hide.
'We were stuck in the back of the pub for about half an hour. We were worried. No Spurs fans were violent or too drunk.'
The French police weren't co-operative or helpful whatsoever. This was my 15th European game and I've never seen anything like this.
'It was premeditated, pre-arranged. It was nothing to do with Spurs fans.'
Spurs hope last night’s attack will not overshadow a game that will see goal-shy Emmanuel Adebayor lead the line as Andre Villas-Boas’ side attempt to reach the last 16 of the Europa League.

The most surprising thing is that there appears to be no real Spurs firm or lads at any of these attacks. Out of any group of 150 Spurs, you would have thought there would always be at least 40 lads eager to fight back? Maybe there's a different type of Spurs supporter who follows them these days abroad.

I think these attacks are pointless. How many spurs fans are actually Jewish?

Are you really saying you could see the point of them, if it was a fact that all Spurs fans, were jewish? Think you need to engage your brain before you type mate

If I'm not mistaken dont the club flying some kind of jewish flag at the ground..?

However I don't feel sorry to spurs after what happened in that pub during that league cup game up there.

how many spurs fans are jewish?
how many attackers are actually nazis?
or could it be they got attacked as english clubs are generally seen as potential targets due to the hooligan image?

typical press...

The Welsh TV news was comedy gold that week. Never forget the sight and sound of them playing all innocent. The truth was that they were probably acting the big one. A load of greeks came along and smashed them up.
