Mobile phone stolen -- Fraudulent Calls mad to Algeria etc

Mon Feb 11, 2013 8:13 pm

My Daughter had her Samsung Galaxy nicked a few Saturdays ago whilst she was in Walkabouts in Cardiff

AS most of us would do she thought her mates might have it or it would be in eth Pub/ Taxi etc so never reported it missing to Orange and the Police until late Sunday morning

Shes just had her bill which is normally 15 quid or so but it was 375 quid with calls to Algeria Switzerland and France between 3.00am and 10.00 am

Quick google search reveals its a well organised criminal activity involving premium rate numbers .

Will Orange re emburse these call charges --and will it effect her insurance claim /

Ny advice to you all would be to try and put a usage limit on your phone, use PIn Protection passwords and above all --ldont leave you r phones in hanbags coats etc --Foreign Criminal gangs are obviously working on Cardiff . Also if you think it might be stolen get it blocked straight away

If your phone ever goes 'missing' ALWAYS assume it has been stolen and report it straight away. As far as the bill goes, Orange are under no obligation to refund the charges. However, as the calls were made from her phone in the UK they were made using the orange network despite then connecting to a foreign network. This means the cost to orange was minimal and they have control over it. If your daughter was abroad (I know she wasnt but I'm just trying to give you an example for when you speak to them) then the charge would be made by the foreign network which the calls went through and there would be very little orange could do about it. What I'm saying in essence is that from a moral point of view as the calls went through oranges network and the charge was minimal then they should refund the charges as they would see those calls were totally alien to her prior usage. But now you have the problem of 'call centres'! Make sure you know you are speaking to someone experienced and if you do not get satisfaction speak to someone higher and then higher again if possible. DO NOT GIVE UP AND TRY AGAIN ANOTHER TIME! As this will allow the person who handled your call too write up notes saying that you have been told you will not get a refund, and any other person you get through to will refer you too those notes as an easy way out rather than take ownership of the situation and try too help. Good luck! :ayatollah:
