Malky Speaks Out About Gerrard!

Sat Feb 09, 2013 11:57 am

BLUEBIRDS boss Malky Mackay has refuted claims from former defender Anthony Gerrard that he wasn’t given a “fair crack of the whip” in his last season at Cardiff City.

Gerrard – who has played 24 times for Huddersfield this season – spoke out about his City departure just before he returned to South Wales as a Terriers’ player for the first game of the season.

Speaking again before Christmas he said: “I didn’t see it at the time, but that manager took everything away from me – my self-confidence, my self-belief.

“It was when the people close to me, my parents and wife, said I wasn’t myself, either on or off the pitch, that I realised.

“When it dawned on me what had happened I had to go away and have a little talk to myself and get my head straight.”

But Mackay said Gerrard – whose last act as a Cardiff player was to miss the crucial spot-kick in the Carling Cup final penalty shoot-out against Liverpool 12 months ago – had been treated the same as any other player.

“He was treated fairly, just like every player here,” said Mackay. “It’s about how players perform on the pitch, nothing more than that.”

Gerrard, 31, joined City from Walsall in the summer of 2009 and made 75 appearances, scoring three goals.

The Liverpudlian first fell out of favour with Dave Jones – being loaned to Hull in the 2010-11 season – before losing his place in Mackay’s first team.

Gerrard subsequently moved to Huddersfield last August and, though he was tipped to lead the Terriers against his former club today with regular skipper Peter Clarke sidelined, that honour will now go to goalkeeper Alex Smithies.

“Players are entitled to their opinion, but ask anybody on our coaching staff and they will confirm Anthony Gerrard was treated exactly the same as every player,” said Mackay.

“At the time last season we felt Ben Turner was more consistent.

“He is an extremely fit individual and had a fantastic season.

“Mark Hudson and Ben were immense as a partnership and that situation sometimes means other players have to bide their time.

“There were a host of defenders here at the time and if we were going to move to the next level we needed better players, better professionals.

“That was explained to everybody. It was explained to Anthony Gerrard and Darcy Blake what was expected of them fitness-wise and the standards they had to meet to be good professionals.

“There is a correlation between being a good pro, taking care of your body and how you play in matches.

“The fitness levels of our players now are a night and day difference to some of the players who were here before.”

Gerrard made it clear he was far from happy in his final months at Cardiff.

“You always have a point to prove when you leave a club, particularly in the circumstances that I left Cardiff,” said Gerrard.

Fitness levels. I don't think players like Gerrard and Blake have a leg to stand on when this fact is look at.

Well done Malky, a perfect leaders response to a scorned childish player who simply didn't fit the bill.

They say he's played 24 times for Huddersfield, like its such an achievement. Simply look at there position and then look at ours. They have let in 51 to our 21. It doesn't take a genius..,

Gerrard at Wembley saw the one moment in his career where he could come out of his cousin's shadow. He saw glory and never recovered from the humiliation of knowing once again he simply wasn't good enough. Sour grapes now.

Both Gerrard and Blake had to go as they were not professional enough just as Chopra etc weren't before them. Our success this year is based upon professionalism, player after player have commented on how close this team is with all the big headed players such as Gerrard having gone

Going by what I saw of Gerrard in training I won't be surprised if he starts next season in L1.

Anthony Gerrard is obviously deluded, as he was a very POOR professional with some of his antics and comments

It's always good to see a player 'annoyed' when not in the team but there are limits to how that should be expressed; particularly in public :(

As Malky confirms, we know he was given multiple warnings and obviously didn't heed them, so he paid the price

He'll fit in well with Huddersfield, as they don't have the same ambitions and expectations as Cardiff City FC ;)

Mind you, he (Gerrard) has been to Hull and back in recent seasons!!

Also interesting to read Malky's mention of Darcy Blake too. A small but telling insight in to at least one issue TWO managers had with him and that is sad for the boy

Someone recently said he (Blake) must be kicking himself for being kicked out of a club on the rise but I believe he isn't that smart and (according to one that knows him well) is only interested in himself; first, last and utmost

Neither player would fit into THIS current side and the club (and probably team mates) are better off without them :ayatollah:

One of the things that struck me in pre season was how slim Turner was looking from the previous season! Looks like the fitness hes worked on has made him leaner! maybe gerrard and Blake simply wern't willing to put the work into getting their fitness levels up! I think its showing this season how fit our side are scoring quite a few late goals reminds me of Norwich 2 years ago :ayatollah:

Gerrard is the most childish player ever.

We brought in player who are pushing eachother for a place and Gerrard simply weren't good enough and couldn't handle it.

I thank him for his time but he is a poor professional and speaks s**t.

Also why mention it because we are playing them? You're time here is done and he had nothing to prove has we know he ent good enough.

Does he think we miss? He's a idiot.

Gerrard throwing his toys out of the pram when malky sat im down and told him what was expected of him in terms of fitness.

Gerrard didnt meet malkys expectations so he got rid of him and that is a benefit to us thats why we are top of the table because of malky and his rules and work ethic .

As a pro Gerrard needs to look at himself and question himself but I wish him all the best at his new club.

I agree but he also isn't good enough.

How people rates him above Hudson confused the hell out of me.

To be fair, at one time when Gerrard and Blake were playing together I think we
only conceded one goal in nine games. They are both very capable footballers but
it takes more than a bit of talent to make it at the higher levels. It takes determination
dedication, and focus. Both players are bell-ends because they had the talent and
blew a chance we'd all give our right arms for!!
