To buy or not to buy.. ?

Sat Jan 12, 2013 8:26 pm

that is the question.

Regular reader but rarely post so be gentle.

Last year we didn't buy as others around us strengthened and many see that as a reason for failure last year.

This year we have a massive advantage and really would need to cock it up big time to lose out again.

The thing is January purchases are rarely cost effective for the players as no-one much wants to release their best players, so the players can be over-priced to prize them from other teams. The players we could sign would have to be agreeable to play in the Championship, so its either players from other Championship teams, the best below or players not getting games in the Prem. If we are promoted then maybe these players are not the ones we want.

If we rest on our laurels and don't buy, and things start to go awry after the window closes (we lose maybe a player or two to injury), could we hang onto a top two place.

At the moment we are 10 points clear of third. So do we buy or not? and if so what do we need, what will we need to replace if we go up.

2 or 3 players would be ideal.

I say we need to buy - our squad isnt as deep as many around us and i think it does the squad we have good to have extra competition for places. take your point bout value for money tho, dont spend silly, spend wisely

I say without a doubt we need to buy 3 players. Striker, central defender and a midfielder. We will have a strong squad then for the final push. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Regular reader but rare poster also :ayatollah:

In my opinion, we need a 25 goal a season striker to get us over the line. I don't think it even necessarily has to be a buy, there has to be someone out there available for loan from a prem squad. He doesn't need to be young, he doesn't need to play pretty football, just needs to get us 10 plus goals over the rest of the season.

If he's on loan he doesn't need to be good enough for the prem, just top rate CCC material. That makes things easier. The £3/4m figures thrown around for players like Jerome and Austin are a bit scary as, yes, they'll bang them in in the CCC, but have never proved themselves in the Prem.

Would prefer a replacement rather than cover for left back personally but agree with your priorities.

2b we have to buy. one a goal scoring striker not a provider, 2 a defender, 3 three a mid-fielder to take the place of witts who has been dreadful this season and 4 a manager if malky cant see it

I think Taylor is a good championship LB.
The cost to bring in a better one in January would be huge IMO. Rather look for better if we go up.

He gets caught out of position to much for my liking.

He's also caused Conway to have to spend far too much time defending instead of going forward.

2/3 players.

A striker.. 2 defenders.

Derby asking for 2 million.. for their best player and fans favourite as I've spoke to a few.

IMO 2 million for a players top player is a steal espically Derby.

I wouldn't have said no to him, espically the money and what he has done with a number of clubs.

Yep Charlie Austin, John Brayford, and a ball winning central midfielder, better than Mutch and gunner if available, difficult job I know, also switch Connolly to Centre half with Hudson and have Turner as cover.......

I think a striker to partner bellamy in hunting down the ball is a must!Cameron jerome is in my opinion the best man for the job ! he can score in the prem so he will definately score them in the championship! Its just the fact of that if malky wants him then he has got to act sooner than later! :ayatollah: :P
