I believe so, I also believe that you should be born Welsh to play for your country!
We have far too many players in the welsh squad who are English and pretending to be Welsh just for the chance to play international football.

Yes which is why Bale should be captain.

why bale?
best player doesnt always make best captain

Would never give it to Bale.
Captain should be Welsh though.

Simply because at times he seems the only one confident enough to take the game by the horns and fight for the win. Only reason he probably would never get it is apparently he's really shy and quiet. Should be a welshman either way

Birthplace does not change national identity!
Thu Jan 10, 2013 1:38 pm
I was born a month early and born in London, it pained my old man until his dying day

From my earliest memories he drummed it into me that I was Scottish and that it didn't matter where I was born... Him and my mother, and everyone else in my family were Scottish, therefore, I was, and that was the end of the conversation
Just curious, does anyone on here feel that the Republic of Ireland teams in the late 80's and early 90's achievements were tainted by having so many players through the grandparents rule? Or do you think the Irish fans just accepted it and enjoyed the good times?

Its not a dig at Ashley Williams. I just dont think an Englsihman should be captain, would feel exactlly the same if Ben Turner played for Wales and was captain. The diference between players like Earnshaw and Williams is that Earnie was brought up in Wales and considers himself Welsh whilst Williams is only playing for us as he knows he wouldnt get into the English team.

When your a country like Wales you take whatever and whoever is best for the role. When you are 3rd rate you dont bite the hand that feeds you. If Williams is the best candidate and gets the players respect in the role then he should be captain. I dont think the players in the squad care about where he is from. I dont see a natural leader who is welsh born in the squad, so why hamper the squad by stating it has to be a Welsh man.
Im sure that if Owen hargreaves had picked Wales all those years ago nobody would have said a thing about a top class Bayern/United player captaining our country.
Giggs was made captain and didnt even turn up for the lesser games during his carear! At least Williams turns up!
Thu Jan 10, 2013 2:29 pm
This wouldntt even be an issue of the captain of Wales wasnt a Jack. Sad times on here indeed.

Yes it would be. Quite happy to say the same ha it been Ben Turner who was asked I captain the side.
Thu Jan 10, 2013 2:40 pm
If you're happy to have players of another nationality play for Wales because they have welsh grandparents etc. You shouldn't really complain about one of them being chosen as captain.
Thu Jan 10, 2013 3:15 pm
It is the Grandparents rule that is at fault, NOT birthplace. Really irritates me.
I'm Welsh and born in London for example. Parents went there for work reasons, moved back here when I was 5.
Thu Jan 10, 2013 3:23 pm
The whole team should be Welsh, not just the captain.
Thu Jan 10, 2013 4:16 pm
Yes, and Ashley Williams is Welsh in my (and his) eyes.

this is a list of non-welsh welsh internationals off wiki, now all of a sudden it's an issue with cardiff supporters
surely you are not thick enough to see if someone is eligible for wales they are eligible to be captain

Shocking post.
It bothered me that Giggs didn't turn up for most games but he played for his country end of.
Ashley Williams accepted to play for Wales because he had no chance and wouldn't get a look in for England.
I have respect for Shawcross and Turner who rejected to play for Wales and stuck to their loyaltys to their country even though they might not play for England.
If Turner accepted to play for us and got made captain I would still boycott Wales like I am now.
I have accepted the fact players who have relations in Wales can play for us and I avoid buying programmes for Wales games because I would have to see the team information and see they are born in England.
The whole team should be Welsh end of.
I won't be going until the decision is changed to Welsh born captain.
The thought of watching an English born player lead us out just sickens me.

in my opinion, if your born in wales. you play for wales.
france took advantage of the current mess of selection, by signing algerian born Zidane. and loads more,

So you'd rather a player be capt who is welsh but won't even turn up for all the games, than an englishman who would put his all into every game?
No wonder our country is backwards! Its like a version of small man syndrome!

To me the captain should be Welsh but for crying out loud when one of our recent squad contained more players born OUTSIDE OF WALES than in it you can't really complain. I remember one player saying he had never been to Wales before until he played for them and when you have players like Freddy Eastwood whose grandad was born in Llanelli playing for us you know times are desperate.

It's an interesting one that. IMO there should be no granparents rule. If you and both of your parents haven't either been born or bred in a country you certainly shouldn't represent that country.
I remember Matt Elliott (former Leicester player in the late 90's early 00's) playing for Scotland through the grandparent rule despite only ever visiting there once on a school trip.
I also don't agree with the rule that allows a player to represent a country just because he's played for a club in that country for a few years.
Fri Jan 11, 2013 11:41 pm
I think I would accept the parents rule without a doubt but not go no further.
You are calling our country backwards because of my opinion yet you're okay with a English born player leading us out?
I will accept any player if parents are Welsh but if its to be captain then its a no from me.
Give his all every game? I don't give a crap. People can moan if players who are Welsh don't turn up but it doesn't bother me as much as players from other countrys being allowed to play for us.
Swansea fans have truly embarassed theirself by supporting having an English born captain leading us out, narrow minded be f**ked.
