Windows 8 - Laptop help

Wed Jan 09, 2013 6:47 pm

Pissed off to f**k and back with my laptop, keeps turning itself on and off and it's basically just dieing.

Looked on Curry's the other day and saw some decent laptops for a good price but they are mostly with Windows 8. I've read some reviews on it, some say it's good, some say it's terrible.

Any thoughts?

Get a decent lappy on ere for less and running windows 7, always found places like currys pc world to be a bit expensive http://www.ebuyer.com/search?sort=price+ascending&a05471=Windows+7+Home+64bit&cat=10&page=1

Or they have one's running older OS, windows 7 is ok though. I've not used windows 8 so can't comment, i'll prob upgrade to it once i can afford a touch screen monitor though.

I just bought a new laptop with Windows 8, is there any way I can download it to Windows 7 if I don't like it? Also can you customise your home screen at all?

There is NO WAY to downgrade to windows 7 from 8. They have locked you in if you have bought a system that came with Windows 8 ready installed. I read a handy article which can boot Windows 8 like the old Windows 7 and act as the same. I'll try and find the article and find what software they suggested. I will edit in when I find it.

Thought I'd post just to bump this up the pile of threads for you.

The piece of software is called Classic Shell. Before I explain, I must stress that I don't personally use Windows 8. I was completely put off by it and find it completely unnecessary for desktop PCs unless there is some kind of touch screen intuition, the same for Laptops. It's not your fault that Windows 7 is now being made discontinued. I have had experience using it, a family member has recently got it. They found it difficult at first, as did I, but they have got used to it. On to the actual software.

I've read this from a magazine called 'Computer Act!ve' Issue 388. Trusted and the UK's top selling PC mag. They recommend this: http://www.classicshell.net/.

Take a look at it, do some research before rushing into it. You may end up liking the new OS anyway. They recommend that once the installation options appear, click the classic explorer and classic IE9 options and choosing 'Entire feature will be unavailable'.

I must say that I haven't used this, but it certainly does seem handy and I will keep this for future use if need be. Good luck, take a look into it like I said and don't rush into it blindly.

Nope, not even a formatted drive, from what I've read anyway. It seems that Microsoft are really pushing their new OS. This only accounts for a computer or laptop that you purchased that came with Windows 8 ready installed. If you have upgraded from Windows 7 to 8, then it is/may be possible to revert back to Windows 7.

I downloaded classic shell onto the wifes new windows 8 laptop, it gives you the start button back and the programme menus, it basically still is windows 8 but with a windows 7 look..Much better, i would recommend doing that.

you got the desktop as usual like windows 7 but no start button, you press the windows button on the keypad and it gives you like all types of apps like a tablet basically, so bit of old mixed with the new app technology that's going around.
