I remember also that it was Alan Ball's last ever league game-the only time I ever saw him play live.I remember thinking how good he must have been in his heyday.Spoke to him in the car park after the game-came across as a tidy fella.

I'll be there somewhere,15 years old at the time. And I remember looking down at the centre circle and thought a little bit of it would make a nice souvenir to stick in the garden. And also being very pleased at starting "You are my Cardiff" with a mate on my shoulders and the whole pitch joined in singing to the team who I think must have all then all been up in the directors box in the Grandstand. Did anybody count how many times the hotdog van that was between the bob and grange got turned over that season in amongst all the fun? I seem to recollect it happening on several occasions.

I'm in there, a tad left from the right hand coppers helmet. Only half a face but a serious fringe and mop of hair.
Them were the days.........I'm on about the hair not the football
That was a great day, watched the match in the enclosure in front of the Grandsatand next to the Grange End. When we went 2-0 up I remember grabbing Twisty (he's the tall one with the wedge haircut looking like a scouser!!!) and just rolling down the terrace in a serious embrace

.
Gazzy is the one snarling on the left and he still hasn't mellowed in 30 years, but has lost most of his ginger hair! Bless him!

Yea I'm in the first photo on the second page, just behind the guy with long hair, who is to the left of the guy holding a scarf, last time I seen that picture, was in a Cardiff v stoke program, where's all the time gone, scary

What you mean funny ? I haven't changed that much !!
Seeing that brought back so many great memories.Personally for me and I'm sure a few others will agree, that was the best ever Season following Cardiff, saw every home game and think I only missed 3 away. Some great trips that I will never forget, particularly those where we travelled by train. capped off with a final day in Bristol that was truly memorable!
I know things change as you get older, but I honestly believe that following city these days is nowhere near as much fun as it was back then.

agree bluebird66 that season was special
chesterfield away on the pitch after the game celebrating with Dave Bennett on my shoulders springs to mind
heady days but great days
Fri Jan 11, 2013 1:39 pm

chris i think its more a case of we looked at things different as a kid ............ i remember stopping in aldershot with a cousin of mine and my uncle took us to see ipswich v liverpool [1978] ... we were down the front and Dalglish came right by us to take a corner .... it felt surreal seeing someone so famous in the flesh that i adored at that time ... so i think you were just looking at it through kids eyes! ............ i`ll never forget us bunking off school to watch newport v carl ziess jena!

great times! ..... our first match was wales v scotland in 77 when toshack scored a hat-trick!

You're probably right in terms of how I viewed events on the field.
So far as off field and the whole experience of travelling away, that is totally different now.Back then a load of us would just catch service trains at whatever time we wanted , more often than not very early in the morning, arriving at various towns and cities throughout the country and doing our own thing, so far as pubs we went to etc.. without all the restrictions there are today.
You going to Blackpool next week mate ?
Fri Jan 11, 2013 7:53 pm
shit i was 17 where the hell has the last 30 years gone
Fri Jan 11, 2013 8:51 pm
Disappointing attendance if i remember rightly only 11 thou.Liked the photo of Somerton pk all those fans behind the goal was city.We battered them had 3 goals disallowed but still lost,
Sat Jan 12, 2013 10:38 am
Think you're right about the attendance, was only around 11,000. However there was still a tremendous atmosphere there that day, probably better than 25,000 create in our new stadium!
When you look back, Ashurst did a fantastic job that season, he had no funds to work with and assembled a squad on a shoestring that gained promotion. No rebranding, badge changing there to guarantee success, achievements that season probably have more true value attached to them than where the club is today !
