Craig Bellamy 'desperate' to lead Cardiff city promotion charge

Jan 8th 2013

CARDIFF City boss Malky Mackay has warned the rest of the Championship that Craig Bellamy is poised to hit top form.

The 33-year-old has been inspirational helping his hometown club surge seven points clear at the top of the table.

Mackay said Bellamy’s “desperation” to play for the Bluebirds had overridden any fears about injuries. Indeed, the attacker played every second of Cardiff’s hectic festive schedule where they packed four victories into a frantic 10-day spell.

Bellamy, like all his first-team colleagues, was rested for Saturday’s FA Cup exit at Macclesfield but Mackay said the Wales veteran was ready to go again as the Bluebirds embark on their promotion push.

“Craig has got a desperation to play for the club at the moment,” he said.

“He’s been enjoying his football and when someone is enjoying the game you see it in them. He’s got over his couple of knocks and he’s got match fit.

“These 90-minute performances from him now, these are the signs that he is getting up to speed. That’s big for us.”

Despite his age and history of injuries, Bellamy is currently one of the most dynamic players in the Championship.

And Mackay believes it is Bellamy’s appetite for the game which set him apart from most other players.

“I think when you see a player closing down in the 85th minute the way Craig does then it is just unbelievable,” said Mackay, whose side return to league action at home to Ipswich on Saturday.

“That is what top players have got, flash in the pan players have talent, but don’t have the work ethic and after a period of years disappear. Top players stay top players because of their work ethic.

“I look at Craig and see that.”

“There’s a lot of talent in the Championship, particularly some of the youngsters coming through, but I am delighted we’ve got Craig.

“He’s someone who from the first day has applied himself and right from the start there has been no ego at all.

“There’s a lot of good will in this club towards Craig and that has been created by the respect he brought with him for those he is working with.”

as a un-reconstructed 51 year old centre half :old: , I love seeing Bellamy closing down the defence in the last 5 minutes.

Agree with Malky reckon he is now match fit.

Bellamy is a legend --He is just 100 % determined to get us over the line and will run through brick walls for us -- Just Love teh guy.

My Worry is that some big Nasty Lump like Shane Lowry - Pudil ,Paul Dixon De Laet and all of the Dirty Leeds Team will Kick lumps out of him in the next few weeks .

Most of the leagues Dirty players are in teams we are playing soon

He has really been different class. Nice to see it based on the team this year with Bellamy, Noone, Hudson, etc. :ayatollah:

I recall something my old man said to me, when bellers was a kid maybe 17/18 i dont know, he played on a sunday
a ringer for district side, he put his shin pads side ways, when asked what is he doing, he replied ''thats where Im gonna get tackles flying in from, given how bad the timing is on park football

I think that's a little silly of Malky to shout his mouth off like that, not only is he putting more pressure on Bellers But he is putting him up for all the teams to go after and stop him playing how every they can stop him. I mean they go after him now, and all it takes is some player to go into beller and fking up his knee
