Velikonja-The Big Question

Sun Jan 06, 2013 11:11 pm

Malky is not stupid and he always speaks the truth. True-spending over a million on a player to develop for our club is strange move -BUT
Whilst looking poor yesterday he hardly had the service did he!!! How would he look with Bellamy, Noone, Witts etc feeding him? THAT'S the real question. If he played and scored from their passes you might then be thinking differently. THINK about it. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Spot on fella, he needs some game time with the first team so we can see what he's really like

The Macclesfield game don't define him either way. Many a good player has looked shit in the welsh cup in years gone by.

He needs to improve, maybe he will maybe he won't.

But my point is he will only improve by playing with better players. :ayatollah:

Spot on. Too many know-alls on here prepared to rubbish him on the basis of one game. He won't be used to the type of opposition he played against....Conference football will be totally alien to him. When Malky thinks he's ready I'm sure he will give Etien his chance. I've got a good feeling that with the right type of service he will prove to be a cute finisher in the box. Hope he doesn't read this forum or he'll feel well fucked off with all the negative comments. Cut the boy some slack FFS. :ayatollah:

fact of the matter is we payed 1.2 million for a 24 year old unknown, who hasn't played a game,
and in my oppinion both kim and mutch will never be first team regulars,

maynards injured,

so we've pissed away most of our budgit

But I'm not basing Etian on just the Macclesfield game, I am also basing Etian on several friendlies where he was playing with better players than in the Macclesfield game and he didn't look up to it at all. I know he scored against Newcastle, but that was pretty much the only thing he did against Newcastle. He's shown he's a class finisher in the development games, but we need more than just a class finisher at this level, otherwise Earnie would still be good enough.

Etian is a similar type of player to Earnie, he plays on the shoulder of the last man ad rarely gets involved with the build up play, but he doesn't possess lightning pace and he looks sluggish, weak and gets physically dominated by the centre backs marking him. He's easy to play against and currently offers nothing to give the opposition a tough time. He doesn't have the pace or dribbling ability to beat players or hit the opposition on the break, he doesn't have the strength to hold the ball up and he is no threat in the air.

Etian needs regular games on loan to a League 2 club where he can hopefully score some goals and get his confidence up to show what he can do, because I don't even think he would get regular games for a League 1 club at the moment unless he improves his all round game drastically. Again, this is not a knee jerk reaction after Macclesfield, I did a post weeks ago giving my opinion on him and I thought I would at least see a small improvement against a Macclesfield team 3 divisions below us, but my opinion has not changed and I am now starting to get worried about him.

I'm not saying he is or isn't good enough, I've only seen him play once as a sub.
But like I said before te macca game his performance would mean he is or isn't good enough.

From what I can gather he is a good finisher and the club are working with him on his physic and general play.

 Some people make me laugh aii, Kim Mutch and Etien have all played for their country already so thats a good sign. Mutch has been injured and Kim and Etien need to get used to the football over here. These 3 have huge potential and are players for the future. Theres alot of things you need to consider when going to play young ones. With the league position we are in you need to be careful because you need the right balance, and in experience can effect that balance. Nothing you can do about Maynard.

I understand what you're saying. But what concerns me is that Etian is 24. If Etian was still a young kid, he would still have age on his side to physically develop. But at 24, I feel he now is what he is and the chances of him drastically developing physically, which I feel is what's necessary for Etian to improve his all round game and become a good player for us are now minimal at this point of his career.

I feel Etian needs intensive training on his touch, link up play, movement and decision making. If Etian improves with these attributes, he can still become a very good goal scoring poacher for us. But I feel there isn't much point in trying to get Etian to play a physical game using pace and power as he doesn't have these attributes and that type of game wouldn't suit him.

Etian's strength seems to be his finishing, but we need more at this level, otherwise we would still have Fowler, Hasselbaink or Earnie up front for us. Obviously, I will continue to support Etian whenever he plays and I hope we give him some much needed game time out on loan, as if he has regular games and settles into a side, I would like to think there will be an improvement in his performances and he will come back to us a better player.
