A forum for all things Cardiff City

I remember there being threads on this message board plus Mike's having a dig at Annis after he claimed we could get 40,000+ crowds if we were in the Premier League.
I was talking to someone high up in the club today and we got chatting about potential season ticket sales should we make it to the Premier League.
I stated I thought that we would have no problem getting another 5,000 season ticket holders, additional to the 20,000 we already have, once promoted, the answer I got was "5,000!! Try more like 15,000 Carl !"
So maybe Annis is not as crazy as some made him out to be.
Do you agree, like club officials, that if we had the stadium big enough, we could get 40,000+ crowds?
Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:17 pm
Easy get 40,000+ for games against the likes of Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea etc if the ground was big enough but
would be back to 25-28,000 for the likes of Fulham, Wigan etc, maybe even less.

Not if as club officials believe, we could sell 35,000 season tickets.
Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:22 pm
It's hard to say, if we had a 40000 seater and the first game of the season was Man Utd home, it would be full no doubt, maintaining that sort of attendance could be difficult but low about 31-32000 could be realistic in my opinion.
Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:22 pm
I believe we could get crowds of around 40,000 most games in the premiership giving Cardiff's catchment area, lots of new plastic fans.

Its an interesting one for sure.
I don't doubt we would sell 30,000+ season tickets depending on price but half of them would only go to half the games.
I can see us in a 40,000 seater stadium packed out for Man Utd, then the following week, empty seats everywhere for a visit of say Norwich.
Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:25 pm
If we expand to 35,000 in the second season (if promoted and stayed up), we would definitely almost sell out every game.
Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:25 pm
I'd say anywhere between 32,000 and 35,000 is realistic. Maybe closer to the 40,000 mark for Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City, Jacks
Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:26 pm
If they were family stand prices £350 for an adult and two kids then we could easily sell 40,000 but it would be like the current family stand and we would have 15,000 no shows for the games that weren't against the big clubs. We could definitely sell 40,000 at that price though.
Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:26 pm
Carl I can't see why we

could'nt although there are a fewold timers who have'nt come back from whenwe sold John Toshack all those years ago when we had the chanceof automatic promotion.
If VT invests in the playing squad so that we are competitive I see no reason for not having big crowds. We need to stay in the league first time up as did the Jacks then it becomes easier to attract better quality players.
Not saying we are up yet but if we keep our form going I'm sure 2013 will see us get to the EPL
Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:29 pm
Its basic economics - if the price is right and you provide a product that people want to see, then people will turn up in their droves.
If that product is Manchester United, Liverpool etc, then there will obviously be extra demand.
Just theoretically speaking, if we wanted to play SOME of our games at the Millenium Stadium, are there any rules in the Premier League to stop us doing it? Loads of people already hate the new stadium for lack of atmosphere anyway, so why not if we can fill it?
The Welsh football team were able to fill it when they reduced the prices enough, and think how bad they are! Obviously, the WRU have first call on their own stadium, but we could probably fill it for the big clubs, especially for £20 a ticket, especially if it falls early in the season.
The times are changing - I'm less worried about moving stadium than I am about changing colours, even though I have (reluctantly) accepted that eventually. We are CARDIFF after all.

35,000 would be easily achieved. In excess of 40k? We'll have to wait and see. Definitely a possibility.
We got over 50,000 in the 1950's remember. Times were tougher then than they are now.
Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:50 pm
Couldn't sell out V West Ham.

I know it's different for us and we'd get more. But I don't think we should be packing our bags to the millenium yet

I was laughed at when I said we would get 70 k plus for man utd in an earlierthread a few weeks ago ,a few years ago wales were were getting 70 k plus ,when the pricing was right I believe we would get huge crowds in the premiership
Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:58 pm
If you look at our crowds through the divisions in last 30 years our fan base have steadily increased . In div 2 we were averaging 8~10k at our heights . In Div 1 it was more like 15~17K and now in Championship we averaging 22k ~ 25k . These figures are approximates but I estimate we could get an average between 30~32kin the prem if we had the capacity.

the amount of united arsenal liverpool fans up here in the valleys who will suddenly become massive cardiff city fans will be unreal! that's the one reason that i will hate IF we become promoted, can't handle one timers who will not sing but are happy to turn up for 3/4 games a season cheering on the away side!

If tickets were £10-15 we'd fill the Millennium Stadium. The same pricing structure as Dortmund. They had 3 years in the bottom half of the Bundesliga and still sold out before someone tells me of how they are always successful. Fans will turn up if the price is right. More people used to go to the cinema when it was cheaper. Now its like £10 per ticket people are put off and most people I know torrent. Simple, get the pricing structure correct.
Fri Jan 04, 2013 9:17 pm
If we had a stadium big enough, let's say 50,000 for arguments sake and we had 35,000+ season ticket holders, I reckon there are 10 teams who would bring over 5,000 away fans if we allowed them that many tickets.
Man Utd, Chelsea, Everton, Tottenham, Arsenal, Man City, Swansea, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham.
Some of those teams would probably bring more too.
If that's the case then our average would be over 40,000 and in those figures we have not taken into account a general sale/walk up crowd either, so potential is there to be well over 40,000.

40,000+ easy Carl. People should realise our club has a massive catchment area at its disposal, more than the majority of Premier league clubs could dream about. All we need is a football club in the Premier League and once established the sky's the limit and thats why we have a billionaiaire in charge of the purse strings with another

( not daft these far eastern geezers

) waiting in the wings to join him should we reach the promised
land

The away fans of Man Utd and Liverpool sell their allocation when they go to Wigan but I think Wigan only got approximately 10,000 season ticket holders.

They deserted at Boro,Hull,Burnley,Leeds,Blackburn etc etc In my opinion they are not real football fans, REAL GLORY HUNTERS WHO I CANT STAND.
Clubs dont really need them in the Premier league, as gate money is a drop in the ocean compared to the Sky money we would receive.
