Conway is the 'most complete' winger for Cardiff City

Fri Jan 04, 2013 5:06 pm

Since formally requesting a transfer away from the club just a few weeks ago, Craig Conway is showing his best form since moving to South Wales and has started every game since replacing the suspended Craig Noone to face Sheff Wed a month ago.

Conway's lack of action had partly been down to the form of others, including Noone and the experienced Tommy Smith but when suspension and injury respectively hit those players - Conway has taken his chance brilliantly.

There have remained concerns over Conway's precise role in this talented Bluebirds squad, since he is neither a flying winger nor a creative playmaker. He is however, a very natural wideman and now that he is playing with confidence - he is showing the ability and the willingness to go outside his man to the by-line, aswell as cutting inside onto his favoured right foot. He is even showing the occasional trick, adding further unpredictability and cutting edge to his game.

It's certainly fair to say he neither the paciest (Bellamy) nor most skilfull (Noone) of our potential wide players. For me, Kim Bo Kyung is far more comfortable in possession and possesses a better passing ability than Conway. Tommy Smith's guile and ability to read the game is excellent.

However, Craig Conway is definitely the best defender of all the above players, and his work-rate is also unsurpassed (Bellamy's exemplary closing down and work ethic is in different areas). Countless times recently we have seen Conway tracking back to great effect and helping out and it is no coincidence that Andrew Taylor is looking his most defensively solid than at any other time in his CCFC career.

Conway is not a leading star of this Cardiff City squad, but remains a very adept 'all-rounder'. I don't believe we could accomodate 2 players like that (e.g. with Cowie on the other flank), but with the explosive pace of Noone or different options offered by Kim/Smith - Conway fills his role to impressive effect and surely has an important role to play over the rest of the season.

My only problem is that he doesnt beat the man enough for me but his overall work rate and delivery of the ball is cracking. Problem is once Tommy Smith comes back who do we play :ayatollah:

He has been great over the last month, looks a lot like the player we saw in his first few weeks here. His crossing is superb and he gets the best out of the full backs on either side, so I wouldn't bring Smith in for him straight away. I'd put him on the bench and make him wait for his chance to replace Conway :ayatollah:

I think Conway's best position would be on the left side of a 4-3-3 formation.

Don't think he is that inconsistent fella, just don't think he can beat a man for pace. However, when he cuts inside he will always find a good pass or draw a foul, thoughts?

His delivery against Millwall was shite.

Noone all day long.

Yes, but what I'm saying is since he has come back he has brought something to the side. He has no pace (agreed), but I believe he has desire, he cuts in and plays a decent ball (on the ground), or draws a foul a lot of the time, which is normally good as it will be in Whitts territory!

Noone draws fouls and can also beat his man.

You wont make me change my mind.

Not trying to Fella, agree Noone is a great player for us, but there were negative commets which I don't believe are justified, the boy gives us an option. You can't say since he has come back he has not done a job!!!!
