Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay plays it cool on transfer window

The Bluebirds’ boss said he would not be forced into paying over the odds, but did confirm a defender is at the top of his shopping list.

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay insists he will not sign players just for the sake of it... for fear of upsetting the harmony in his squad.

The Bluebirds are currently runaway leaders in the Championship, sitting seven points clear at the top after a fantastic festive season where they won all four games, including a victory at Birmingham on New Year’s Day.

The January transfer window is now open and there is much conjecture Mackay will bring in a big-name striker.

The Bluebirds’ boss said he would not be forced into paying over the odds, but did confirm a defender is at the top of his shopping list.

And he warned supporters may have to wait until the end of the month for any deals to be done.

“We have to be very guarded about it and only bring in players who will add to my group,” said Mackay.

“I’ve got a good group of players here with a great willingness and attitude and no way am I going to spoil that just for the sake of bringing someone in.

“It’s all about strengthening the team if there is not anyone out there who is going to strengthen us I am not going to be bringing someone in just for show.

“You pay double premium for players with some clubs not wanting to sell, but being forced too, whilst others decide at the last minute not to sell at all.

“These things can go to the last day of the window. It is a very strange month.”

With left-back Simon Lappin returning from his loan spell to Norwich, Mackay said one of his first tasks was the bring in cover for full-back Andrew Taylor, who missed the Birmingham match through illness.

Mackay added: “Simon did a great job for us. He’s a great lad and was a little unfortunate not to see more action, but he returns to Norwich now.

“We’ll look at it as part of our general recruitment over the next couple of weeks as to what we do for defensive cover.”

I have been saying this for weeks now,

I would be surprised but not shocked to see us bring in 3 players, however if we sign a top class striker at this level I wil be shocked,
its a dangerous game waiting till the last minute players agent's use clubs proposals as bargaining tools for there players and often end up using clubs like cardiff city to get the players their first choice option with a better wage contract offer

Looks like the same as last year then.

Malkys clearly not going to start naming players hes going to sign though is he ? I just hope we dont leave it to the last day and get screwed over at the last minute like we did with marvin sordell last season
I expect a defender, striker and a loan midfider to come in. With us being in such a strong position bringing players in that have the right attitude is so important

Yes they do as its obvious to anybody with any knowledge of football that this window is a completely different animal to the close season. He's just repeating what I've heard from many managers.

IDIOT HE IS!!

Has Malky never bought a car??

EVERYONE knows that you walk into a showroom with tons of cash visible
and shout as loudly as possible:

"I want that Audi R8 over there, the one going for £65k, no way am I leaving without
it, i need it, i want it, and I've got the money to buy it!!!"

THEN you negotiate with the seller to get it as cheap as possible. :? :? :? :? :?

Some post on here to shit stir and make out we're not going to try to get players in.
But some are genuinely stupid. Thats my only explanation

As do yours. You were very quick to say Malky was covering for Tan last season and that
there was no real money available in January. But you werent as fast to admit you were
wrong when THE TRUTH came out and we really HAD put bids in for Noone and Sordell

My dear Angelis.

Did Malky sleep with your wife? Its the only explanation i can think of as to why you have not one good word to say about our manager who has got us top of the league after 26 games?

i didnt say he should have signed anyone by now? i said its not good enough as to the intent.
this is the time of year when sides who go up BUY or LOAN to get them over the line. as much as weve done excellent to get where we are everyone knows were scraping results at the moment

You have absolutely NO idea what is happening behind the scenes as we speak. None.
Malky Mackay is telling all and sundry that we will NOT be held to ransom, and we will
NOT pay over the odds. For all YOU know, we have offered £4m for Charlie Austin but
Burnley are holding out for £6m... So Malky is sending out a message that there are
plenty more fish in the sea.

We did NOT just 'try' last January with Sordell and Noone, we put in bids and they were
accepted. Then we got fucked over.

This season, Malky will be that little bit wiser.

But you crack on eh. Why not kick off and say we're f*cking up....

Its been the story of our season so far!!

erm.... :?

By the nature of your posts I'd say your still in school or just too thick to realise what a manager says about transfers to the media isn't actually what is happening.clubs especially this time of year want to buy before they sell so it always ends up that a player isn't available till the end of the transfer window why do you think there is so many signings on the last day.if the player he is looking at was available today at the right price malkys not exactly gnna say naaaa leave it till the last day of the transfer window is he? God help some of our fans

Take what he says in January with a pinch of salt.

He's not going to say in the media that he wants 5 new players and has money to spend is he?

I expect us to sign a full back and maybe a premier league striker on loan but nothing more than that.

Perhaps we'll get Sordell in on the last day of the window.

Wouldn't be surprised if that's just a smoke screen...malky loves a surprise signing! :ayatollah:

THE famous ghost bids for Sordell and Noone....

Them damn Malaysians slated from pillar to post for 'forcing' Malky to
'toe the company line' and say the bids were genuine

Then lo and behold.... They WERE genuine bids.

But it suited to make it look like Tan was holding back.

Facts!!!
