Who is your childhood footballer?

Thu Jan 03, 2013 12:18 am

Who is that one footballer you will always remember growing up? When you was really young and just vaguely remember them.

I'll go first.. Ronaldinho! :ayatollah:
When he was at the top of his game in like 2004 or 2005. Was the best player in the world and one of the most skilful I have ever seen!

Marcus Babbel. A bit of an odd one but I admired the way he came back to play top level football after he was paralysed and almost died. I think up until recently he was managing Hoffenheim.

Favourite city player was Phil Stant, loved watching the guy play!!

Phil Dwyer, I was a defender in my playing days and as a youngster playing in defence I wanted to be phil dwyer

And Robert Earnshaw for Cardiff.

Finished "Joe's" book a few weeks ago Annis, was quite disappointed to be honest as thought there'd be a lot more but aye the likes of Mr Dwyer, Tommy Smith of Liverpool, guys who played their hearts out and appreciated what it meant to wear the shirt. We are mere mortals, as Dwyer more or less says in his book the feeling of scoring that last minute goal in front of of a packed terrace where a lot of your mates are standing has to be one of the best feelings in the world.

One of my best football feelings has nothing to do with Cardiff City funnily enough, it was a European Cup game, final I believe, watching on TV where the great Liverpool team of the 70's or maybe 80's were down against Bayern Munich? Corner or something and the ball hits the net, commentators struggling to see who scored and then its Tommy Smith, its Tommy Smith. Great British football moments, I'll have a look on net see if I can find it.

1977 and it was Borussia Munchenglabach

A bit long at 15 mins but does have the original Barry Davis commentary. When football was football.

For City it would have to be Stantona
Other than Stant it would have to be Giggs. Got his autograph back in the 91/92 season when he was starting to break into the Utd team. The autograph shows him wearing the old Adidas Man Utd shirt. Still one of my most treasured items :)

Edson Arantes do Nascimento. Pele to you and me. Wonderful player and gentleman both on and off the pitch.

Special mention to Johan Cruyff as well. One of the most skilful players of his generation. Great to watch.

Gerd Muller for obvious reasons

Maradona for me. That '86 World Cup (which was my first one I really took note of) was one single handedly.

Carl Dale as the Cardiff player but I did love watching David Hirst the Sheffield Wednesday striker. Proper old fashioned centre forward. As I got older, Willie Boland was always a favourite of mine because of his "psycho eyes"! :D :ayatollah:

Giggs
+most of the mid-late 90s United squad

Brazil Ronaldo, R. Carlos, Zidane, Figo
+most of the early 00's Madrid squad

Earnie.

My first Ccfc full season was the 82-83 promotion winners. Jeff Hemmerman was my favourite from that era. I've always loved watching home grown players coming through. Scott Young, Damon Searle, Jason Perry and Phil Dwyer are some of my favourites.

Saunders, rush, giggs, zidane, and of course Speedo!!!

Giggs and Earnie.

Will never forget Giggs' brilliant goal against Arsenal :ayatollah:

Don Murray - none of this modern flim flam about going up for set pieces, a City corner would see our Don stood next to the oppo centre forward in the centre circle, eyeing him up for the next tackle :old:

Only a nipper at the time, but our Don was just hard as nails to me.
