Player Rating V Millwall

Another game of two halfs but a reverse of Palace, thought we played very well in the first half today and unlucky not to get a couple more. Some of the passing and moving was excellent especially early on. Second half we dug in a bit more and it was very scrappy and poor but its a win and a cleansheet, good work.

Marshall 7 – A few good saves, fumbled on or two I think he may have caught but he pushed them into safe areas, a good keeper.

Kev 6 – Solid, saved us a few times with some good challanges, passing at times poor but he makes up for it woth pure work ethic.

Hudson 7 – Wins so much in the air, made a few uncharacteristic mistakes today but still excellent

Turner 6 – Looked more comfortable today than on Wednesday, did well but his distribution is a problem

Taylor 8 – Thought he played well today, linked up with Conway and got forward very well.

Conway 7 – Real live wire, covered Taylor very well, crossing should have been better but really has discovered some good form.

Witts 6 – Started brightly but faded a bit, worked hard closing down

Gunnar 7 – very good 45mins, defended well and got forward to good effect, shame he went off.

Noone 7 - Worked hard and used the ball pretty well

Rudy 7 – Got the only goal, started very well in the first 20mins or so but faded.

Bellamy 7 – He is 33 and puts every player to shame with his work ethic, does need to start finishing some of the chances he is getting though.

SUBS
Mutch 5 – Doesnt do enough for me, reminds me of Berbatov with his lacklustre movement, passing again awful but did get stuck in. Last 15 mins or so he improved.

Helguson 5 – Had no effect on the game really, Id have rather have seen Mason come on tbh.

Cowie 6 – Although he came on wide he helped sure us up centrally at a time we were getting overrun.
Found it really hard to rate players this week, no one was excellent, no one was poor, they all worked hard and chipped in.
Is it coincidence that in the last two games our best form has been the halfs that Gunnarrson has played in? I don’t think so.

Ref – thought he was very good today, maybe by the letter of the law he wasn’t great, he let a lot of things go and played advantage a lot but I much prefer that, seemed fair to both teams, had comman sense. Refreshing and nice to see.

Luke, to me Marshall deserves at least an 8, as once again 3 great saves plus a clean Sheet. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Enjoy reading your player ratings as usual. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Only a 7 for Marshall?!? :o

agree with most of that except whitts ..not sure whats gone wrong with him..... first touch woeful.....passing poor ....tackling weak as f..k....hardly strays over the half way line....passes to defenders who are in no better position than him...lets huds and turner hoof it rather than try something himself /.......today he rates no more than 4 from me .....cant wait to see kim given a chance in whitts position :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Marshall - 7 - Some good stops, would have been an 8 but for the amount of time he lost possession by just booting it
Kev - 7 - Looking much more confident, trying runs and his passing was improved, nearly there
Hudson - 7 - Solid enough, could have scored
Turner - 6 - Made one good tackle, too much hoofball
Taylor - 8 - Seems to be putting a good string of games together, did well at the back and got forward well. A better final ball would have got him MOTM imo
Conway - 8 - Did really well although his final ball was off, link up play with Kev and Taylor was excellent
Whitts - 7 - Did well, drifted off for a bit too long in the 2nd half but when he got back into it he helped calm the game down, Cowie or Gunnar being on the pitch suits him
Gunnar - 7 - Impressed when he was on, gives the midfield some strength and is a good passer, hope he's fine for Brum
Noone - 8 - Took players on beating them, looked a little jaded at times
Bellamy - 8 - Forced loads of mistakes from Millwall, great runs and link up play
Gestede - 7 - Did well, people give him too much stick

Mutch - 6 - Still doesn't really impress me, drifts off too much
Cowie - 7 - Calmed the game down, his energy came in handy
Helguson - 6 - Did very little other than a good first time pass

Marshall - 7 great saves but kicking generally poor today

Mcnaughton - 7 great defensively for us again

Hudson - 7 Both centre halfs are solid this season

Turner - 7

Taylor - 6 not good enough defensively for me lets players constantly get the better of him and often stands off the man, good going forward though

Noone - 7 Played well not sure why he was taken off

Gunnarson - 7 Played really well till inured

Whitts - 6 very poor for him played some great balls but was missing most of the game and nearly cost us a couple of times with wayward heading

Conway - 7 another solid game for him

Rudy - 8 Going to stick my kneck out but thought he played really well and took his goal well. Faded towards the end but held up the ball well and won most of the ball in the air

Bellamy - 9 best player on the pitch by a mile and never stops working. Players arent reading him quick enough

Mutch - 7 played much better than recently when he came on but should have scored

Helguson - 6 didnt do much when came on and barely won anything in the air

Cowie - 6 did ok when he came on but offers no width

Re: Player Rating V Millwall

Some things bothered me about the 1st team squad today:-

1) The lack of real quality in the side, and by quality, I don't mean what the individual is capable of, but the quality to get the job done efficiently over 90 mins, yes I know we won but I don't just want us to win ugly all the time, I want us to frighten teams, and make sure they treat us with respect, we give teams confidence by letting them back into games.

2) What the hell has happened to Whittingham, he is the shadow of himself, I thought he was poor today, sometimes he looked frightened to try something, he backed out of some tackles, and passed the ball square or backwards for no reason, reminded of Mcphail on a bad day.

3) That miss by Belermy when he was clean through today was unforgivable, we have come to expect better than that from him. If they had scored after that, and they had their chances we'd have lots two points, to say we didn't anyway is making excuses.

If we are going to buy in January, I hope it is real quality, and not fill ins, I just don't want players now to win us promotion, but class that will keep us there.

How I saw today's game:

Marshall - 8 Kept us in the game as Millwall could have equalised on at least two occassions. Kicking was poor at times. Remains a very good keeper though.

Taylor - 6 Did well, fairly anonymous, no clear errors. Solid but should be replaced in January.

Hudson -7 Another fine performance and looked comfortable all game. When he came forward second half he caused chaos in their box and almost scored. One of our best.

Turner - 7 The Yin to Hudson's Yang. Put in some first class challanges including one memorable slide in the box. His distribution does seem wasteful and inaccurate on occassions, but still prefer him to Connolly.

Kev - 6 Did the job he was assigned very well. One of the finest defenders in the league, however attacking and even basic passing is another matter all together. I feel his days with us are numbered now, and it would be sad to see such a loyal servant leave.

Conway - 9 My man of the match. Takes on players with confidence, works well with Bellamy and Whitts, and has a good delivery to match. Furthermore, he acted as our left-back on occassions and showed great desire to win the ball back. Like having a new player.

Whitts - 5 Simply not his day. Arguably the most technically gifted player on the pitch, yet looked sluggish and out of form today. Got caught in possession too often and failed to utilise his left-foot at all. Needs a break.

Gunnarson - 7 Unlucky to get injured early on, however showed his trademark desire and aggression in the first half. Great midfielder with a dangerous throw. Deserved his start ahead of Mutch and showed why.

Noone - 7 Pacey, willing to take players on and get forward. Not his most spectacular game however he was still a nuisance for the Millwall defence and could have scored.

Rudy - 8 A wise move to start him after showing clear improvement as a substitute during recent weeks. Looked to be a problem for the Millwall defence early on, winning headers and setting up attacks. Took his goal very well. However, he seemed to fade out after 40 minutes. Raises questions about his fitness, and cements the view that he is an impact sub.

Bellamy -7 The most hardworking player on the pitch and at 33 puts the young ones to shame. Seems to set the bar in terms of desire for the team and chases down every last ball. Willing to take players on and took the 'u' from Shittu ( ;) ) Wasn't his day in front of goal, however he remains a vital component of this team.

I thought Taylor and Conway players well down the left and with bellers joining in.
Surprised you thought Taylor was anonymous as I thought he was more involved than any other player really, especially in the second half.

I thought he was great, not only did he do well in attack, he was pretty solid and not a lot really got past him

He was left suspect many times today. Good going forward but very slow getting back. They nearly scored in the second half because he didnt track back if the player had his shooting boots on

I know the incident you mean but I think that's more to do with players not covering.
Witts soon started covering after a bollocking from Hudson.

We need better than Taylor though he worries me everytime the opposition attack us down the right. Hes great going forward mind but I wish he would look up a bit as Bellamy is always waiting hanging off the shoulder for him to play it through.

Lefts backs ain't so easy to come by though, Noone, Conway, bellers have made many a left back look silly. It's a tough position to fill even in the prem.
Taylor isn't perfect by any means but I rarely see a better left back at this level. I do think he is underrated and been excellent lately.

Very true I know its unlikely but I wouldnt mind having a cheeky bid for Olsson at Blackburn or the boy at Middlesborough but cant see either happening

Take it from someone who plays left back, it's very difficult as most players are right footed and prefer the right wing, and that's where most attacks happen

I remember MM saying how lucky we were to get Lappin as 2-3 other clubs were after a LB but failed, says it all.

If we got the money someone who can play mainly left back but switch to right back would be ideal.

Noone and Conway the same mark :?

Conways final ball was shocking today got in some good positions and wasted it.

Noone in the other hand ruined the full back 1st half, set up Rudys goal, set up Bellars a couple of chances. Just a shame we couldnt get him on the ball 2nd half.

I mentioned comes us final ball, unusually poor.

Conway got the mark for his team work and defensively covering, IMO Conway had the better game.
