Etien Velikonja

When is he going to play? I've heard good things from when he was at Maribor and have failed to see why he isn't playing.

Cant see him making the squad with maynard coming back and hopefully a new striker in january

he needs first team championship football we should send him out on loan to someone who need strikers so he gets game time and we can asess him

I was thinking that would happen but I thought as he has played UEFA Champions League football over the past few seasons that he would be ready for this level.

If Etien isn't ready for the Championship, then how will he be ready for the Premier League next season?

The Macclesfield game is the ideal time for him to have run out so we can see how he's coming on. The same goes for the others on the bench.

The players that are ahead of him have been doing the business I think. I trust Malky's opinion so if Velikonja isn't involved then I guess there's a decent reason why.

I don't understand why we haven't loaned him out somewhere already so he can get some experience of the British game and keep his fitness. If he's the quality he should be then surely he would have developed quickly and be ready to come back to us now primed and raring to go?

I think we will see him in the F.A cup. We will see what he is capable of then. He is performing in the reserves I think he will take his chance and bang in a few goals in the second half of the season! :ayatollah:

I feel everyone is expecting something special because of the money we have paid and he has a fancy, exotic, foreign name. Would we all be continually asking about him and making the same fuss if he had a normal, British name? Probably not.

I watched Velikonja in the friendlies at Oxford, Cheltenham and home to Newcastle. He plays on the shoulder of the last man and rarely gets involved in the build up play. He may have been short of fitness during the friendlies, but he looked slow, sluggish and weak to me. He was constantly getting outmuscled and bullied off the ball, couldn't hold it up and I lost count of the number of times his marker nipped ahead of Velikonja to win the ball when it was played up to him to hold. Obviously he knows where the back of the net is, but he's like a cross of Earnie and Ferretti (if you remember him). Hopefully he has got fitter, sharper and stronger and gets a run out next Saturday to show what he can do.

Harsh - I saw him against Forest Green and Newcastle and thought he did fine, especially against the Geordies. Seen him a couple of times in training too and personally I think he looks a decent player but Malky's game plan at present just seems to be lump it forward for Helgusson or Rudy to knock down and he doesn't fit that style of play. Hopefully, it won't knock his confidence too much by not getting game time and expectations won't be too high for him to be able to pick up the pace straight away if he ever does get a chance.

I didn't go to Forest Green and in the Newcastle game, I don't think he did a great deal apart from his goal, which I doubt Newcastle would have conceded in a proper competative game as it was a long ball over the defence that he ran onto. Like you say, let's hope he grabs his chance as I'm sure he will get a run out at some point next Saturday.
