Language row: Police called after Dr Robyn Lewis demands shop bill in Welsh
Dr Robyn Lewis insisted the shop assistant told him the amount owed in Welsh
Police were called to a shop in Gwynedd after the cashier asked a former archdruid for payment in English.
Dr Robyn Lewis, 83, insisted the shop assistant at the Spar in Pwllheli told him the amount owed in Welsh.
But she repeated it three times in English before the manager told Dr Lewis he would call the police unless he paid or left the premises.
Dr Lewis said: "All I wanted was an answer in my own language, in my own country."

It was sorted out by me being given another Welsh-speaking cashier - honour was satisfied”
Dr Robyn Lewis
Former archdruid
"The young lady at the till spoke fluent Welsh but she told me the sum of £58.62 was due," he said.
"I asked her to repeat it in Welsh but she said it again in English.
"I told her I'd asked her to repeat it it in Welsh but she said it for the third time."
Dr Lewis was expecting the cashier to ask him for "pum-deg-wyth punt, chwedeg-dau".
But instead she said his shopping was "fifty-eight pounds and sixty-two pence".
When the first officer from North Wales Police arrived back-up had to be called because he was a non-Welsh speaker.
"It was sorted out by me being given another Welsh-speaking cashier whom I spoke entirely in Welsh," Dr Lewis said.

Conrad Davies, who owns the Spar shop, said: "The customer was not happy so we had to call the police as he refused to pay for his goods.
"The situation was completely blown out of proportion and left our member of staff extremely upset."

Yeah that guy thinks he's above people because he can speak welsh.
If that was my shop I'd have thrown him out and banned him.

Crazy thing is he could clearly speak English.
Just my opinion, but the money spent on the losing battle of keeping the language alive would be better spent on our underfunded health and education systems in Wales.

How Fooking pathetic. And that was worthy of the police being called out. In many cases if your house is burgled they don't have the time or man power to come out.
Should that reply be in welsh Chiefs ?

Its idiots like him which harm the welsh language not help it!

What a silly ignorant c**t. Its embarrassing reading shite like that. But hey-ho, perhaps
it was his annual excursion from his hole in the ground. Really furthered the cause there
he has!! knobhead!!

What a f*cking bellend. I don't blame the shop owner for calling the police, if a customer is refusing to pay that's what you do. But this bloke is being awkward for the sake of being awkward. If I was the shop keeper I'd put a sign in the window saying "f**k off" in Welsh.

What a toss pot. This is what fustrated me about people like him think they are better than others because they can speak welsh. Making things awkward for the sake of being awkward

Annis, I couldn't agree more. Across Wales there are a stream of 'Welsh Language Officers' whose aim is to ram all-things Cymraeg down the throats of workers; even if those workers are not Welsh naturals!!
Many jobs have a 'Speak Welsh' proviso on them, which precludes (surely illegally?) 95% of the population of Wales and 99.999999% (there's always an exception!

) of the rest of the UK population
To make it worse we often don't consider the COST of instigating all these 'Welsh Language' policies, e.g. every book or sign costs twice as much to print in a region that isn't exactly flush with money in the first place
I have nothing against the Welsh language persay, or those who want to (a) keep it alive, or (b) wish to speak it in their own circles but (a bit like when the Jehova's or the Mormon's knock my door) I don't want it rammed down my throat and I would rather see valuable resources put back into the whole community rather than looking after a vocal few!!
Rant over and off to the game at this point. Diolch yn fawr i gyd

If they can't speak English very well (which I don't think is very common at all in this day and age) then it's understandable that they want it in Welsh but it seems in the examples given that those involved are just being cuntish and getting on their high horse which doesn't do the Welsh language any favours.
Sat Dec 29, 2012 12:19 pm
Typical of 'some' people in this country.
Sat Dec 29, 2012 12:28 pm
The shop worker could have just said the total in Welsh though as they were capable of it if they'd had a conversation in Welsh, making a mountain out of a mole hill.
Sat Dec 29, 2012 12:31 pm
Glad it happened, might help turn the tide. It's a travesty the amount of money that gets thrown at the Welsh language while the NHS has wards with 2 nurses to 30 patients or under-funded schools.

This happened to me up the Valleys before when working. Some stupid woman refused to speak in English to me at a cafe so I went next door with a work colleague and then two others from another company followed in for same reason. Just people up their own backside.

It a shame there are idiots like him out there while so many people are trying hard to preserve our culture and heritage.
All it does is allow people (as they are doing on this thread) to critise the Welsh language and anybody who tries to defend it.
By the time this thread ends we will see 'Welsh Nazis' 'waste of resources' 'nobody speaks welsh anymore' etc from people who have an axe to grind because they dont, cant or wont speak Welsh.
We should be proud of our language and traditions, or else we will end up like the English who have joyfully destroyed their own traditions pandering to others.
Yma o'r hyd.

I got pulled over in Cardiff a few years ago for not wearing a seat belt. I gave all my details in English but when asked what language I wanted the ticket in, I said Welsh. She gave me both because she thought I couldnt speak Welsh. If the bitch wasnt such an arrogant little bitch then she would have made her job a little easier.
Needless to say, its not big or not clever to drive without a seatbelt.
Sat Dec 29, 2012 6:48 pm
Former archdruid ,that says it all.
Sat Dec 29, 2012 7:30 pm
Ridiculous. Does it really what matter what language she said it in? If he could understand her then there's no problem.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-20677528Welsh speakers falling and money being used. Go into a under-funded hospital ward with minimal staff or a school that doesn't have the money it needs and tell them how a language that cannot survie without government propping it up is more important than their needs.
It will be looked back on in future generations as a travesty.
If you want the language to survive, teach it in your houses and in your communities. If it isn't strong enough to survive without it being rammed down the throats of people, it doesn't deserve to be.

mmm whilst sensus says less people speaking welsh! it flys in face of fact that more and more children are opting to go to welsh medium schools, conclusion is people didn't answer sensus honestly, same can be said of other questions answered in sensus, people did not answer them honestly result distorted conclusions

What a load of rubbish. Why would anybody want to lie on the census about speaking welsh?

Not criticising anyone who
WANTS to speak Welsh
IN THE RIGHT ENVIRONMENT but I am critical of the unecessary use of finances to ram it down peoples throats 'just to make a political statement' as it
COSTS LOTS OF MONEY to do so and, in all truth, the majority of people in Wales are pretty ambiguous when it comes down to hard facts
The four major 'international' languages are English, French, Spanish and Chinese and if Wales really
WANTS to do serious business in the world then it surely isn't going to be in Welsh, is it?
A historic tongue which
SHOULD be preserved but
NOT at the expense of nurses, teachers and other critical services that are being eroded whilst the Welsh Language Society appears to be getting more and more (both on a financial and poloitical level)
Please get your facts right before calling perfectly reasonable people (albeit with an alternate view to yours) Nazis because that, my friend,
IS TRULY OFFENSIVE
