StRIKER NEEDED.. But what style?

Fri Dec 28, 2012 11:41 am

It's clear to see that we will be looking at signing a player or two in the Janueary Tranfer Window. Very likely a Striker. With different opinions/rumours/and links.. What kind of "up fronter" do we NEED.

A Big bustling centre forward? Perhaps a new target man to replace the ever ageing Helguson. Or maybe just another Maynard. A pacey goal poacher with a good attacking position sense.

This Topic has been at the back of my mind for weeks.. What do we need?

Someone who can play up front on his own,and also who can play alongside Maynard if we are planning for the future.
I think it will be Marvin Sordell. Not getting a look in at Bolton, probably wishes he had not listened to his advisors, and had kept on driving along the M4 to Cardiff last January.

But if he's not getting a look in at struggling Bolton, would he be right for us?

Ok, bearing in mind we have scored THE MOST GOALS IN THE LEAGUE, although a lot of people think we need a striker, do we really? Velikonja hasn't even gotten a game yet...

I just think we need 2 full backs and thats it...

What happens when Bellamy or Helguson pick up an injury? I firmly disagree with your comment.

In fact we have so many strikers Earnshaw couldn't get near the team as was loaned out, we can recall him... then theres Mason, Gestede and Velikonja PLUS Tommy Smith often played as Striker in the past!!! Loads of options, Fullbacks in what we need.

Velikonja is not 'ready' yet, Rudy I don't think is capable enough so a strong centre forward is needed if Heidar picks up a knock.

Gestede isn't good enough and Velikonja is apparently not ready. We can't rely on these. We need somebody else. A consistant 20 goal a season striker. Somebody that we won't be afraid to keep if we get promoted.

Totally agree, why go for a particular style of striker when Cameron Jerome has everything? Jerome has all the attributes required for a top Championship striker. He has the pace to feed off Helguson's flick ons and hit teams on the breaks and he has the power and strength to play the target man role, hold the ball up, link the play and then get into the box to get on the end of crosses. Jerome has it all and although I am a firm believer in the "never go back" theory, Jerome was young and raw with us, he will come back to us an even better player and he will make a huge difference!

Clearly we don't NEED a striker. We are the top goalscorers in the division and top of the league!

I agree with this to a certain extent.. But I've seen Sunday league players who are more clinical in front of goal than Cameron Jerome. I find he's great for everything other than finishing.

I do agree with his finishing, he is not a clinical finisher but if he was, he would probably be in a top 6 Premiership team. He has still managed to hit double figures in struggling Premiership teams and he hit 20 goals for us the season before we sold him. For Birmingham and Stoke, Jerome has been pretty much in and out of the team, unable to get a regular run of games. I think if we signed him and he got a run of games in a top of the league team and we get his confidence up, Jerome would be unplayable.

Good point. I think he's the type of striker we could do with. Take some of the pressures from other players to score.

Since when has Jerome been arrogant? He moved on because we needed the money, but he gave his best for us when he was with us.

100% spot on and has Premiership experience. He also has those wonder strikes in his locker which could bag us a 1-0 win in a tough game which could be the difference between 3 points or 1. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

The only player we have more clinical than Jerome is Bellamy. He can score long rangers, headers, tap ins, his movement off the ball is brilliant and he can score lobs. He also has pace. The only reason he left last time was because we needed the money and he was an up and coming talent worth something. Since then he hasn't really been given a chance.

He's shit takes far too many chances to score a goal and he has a big ego, would be gutted if we got him.....

That's a bit of a harsh statement to be fair. Sometimes a better player just doesn't get played. God knows why. He's still a better striker than anyone we have besides Maynard. He played in the Olympics, and looked really good there. Would be a great buy, depending on how much he costs.
