Advice for a new Cardiff City fan

Mon Dec 24, 2012 2:02 pm

My 8 yr old son and I have decided to become Cardiff City fans. We live in the United States and wanted to find an English football team to root for. Our family ancestry traces back to Wales so we decided to choose a Welsh team. And after comparing Swansea and Cardiff City it was obvious who we should root for. Is there any advice any of you have on what we have gotten ourselves into or ideas on how best to follow the club or any traditions we need to know?

Thanks, I appreciate it. We really want to do this the right way and become true Cardiff City fans.
There's something special about the teams and fans of English football teams and we want to be a full part of it.

Where do we start.

As mentioned the Ayatollah :ayatollah: is unique and historic to Cardiff City.

We are the capital of Wales and have adapted the famous song Men of Harlech. Another song generated from our own fans is Pick and Shoval, a commemorate song for our solid fan base from the valley.

We've learned the Ayatollah and started learning the words to I'll Be There, so we are on our way! And I know you are Welsh and not English How do you describe the football league you play in? Is there a name for the Premier League and Champions League and the other divisions all together or do you just base it off of what league you're in at the time? Also, if I am going to buy my son a jersey should I buy him a red one or blue?

The wonderfully acerbic Swansalona fans who stick up for their players attempting to murder fellow professional footballers.

Well, that's what the well respected Sir Alex Ferguson said yesterday :D :D

Welcome to the Bluebird family both. :ayatollah:

1. We are nicknamed the Bluebirds
2. The ayatollah (videos of our fans doing it on YT will show you how its done ;) )
3. We won the FA Cup in 1927 and are the only Welsh club to take a major trophy across the border
4. We used to play at Ninian Park
5. We're currently top of the Championship
6. We're owned by Malaysian US billionaire Vincent Tan

We are one of the most passionate teams around. We usually have the best atmospheres and can sometimes generate intimidating electric atmospheres. We have recently had our club torn to shreds by a rich investor by changing our history and identity which the majority of us are against. We are BLUE not red. We are the bluebirds. We used to play at Ninian Park but now play at a disgusting soulless bowl that is nicknamed 'Lego land'. We are the most recent of teams that has caught the modern football, boring soulless disease. We are Welsh not English. We are a working class club that has originated from miners and dockers. We do a famous thing - 'the ayatollah'. Can't be arsed to explain it. :ayatollah:

We have one of the worst match day atmospheres going. I don't understand why you are trying to lie to him. Rees threads upon threads saying so after every home match.

And can people stop saying we are owned by Vincent tan - we are not.

Lots of good info in here fellas. And thanks for all the youtube links, it's nice to be able to see some of the team's history. All of the Premier League games are on here in the states but none of the Championship games, so I haven't been able to actually watch the team play. I am strongly considering getting the Cardiff City Player so I can at least watch the full games afterwards.
