That's BBMs way of playing to dominate possession. Warnock played more direct football and when he was manager people were moaning about that style as well.

Do we need to pass ball 4 or 5 times between trott and defenders before we go forward? Nearly every time it happens

Bolton attack but the Bluebirds take it away and do well with the ball. The ball is sent in and Salech is in place to receive the high ball, but a free-kick is given before anything else can develop
