Another 563 people have died after contracting coronavirus, taking the UK death toll to 2,352.
Today’s jump in deaths is the biggest daily increase since the outbreak began, following another massive rise of 381 deaths yesterday. It took 17 days for the number in the UK to pass 200, and has taken a further 11 days to pass 2,000.
The updated toll comes after Wales recorded 29 more deaths. A further 16 people were confirmed dead in Scotland, while Northern Ireland recorded two more deaths today.

Rather ominously the infections are up the best part of 50% today which suggest there's worse to come in the next week. And Wales is 25% above the infection rate for the UK as a whole so it could be even bleaker.

This was going to be a bad week from what has gone before - The major concern is the experts say the height of this will be
Around the 6th - 20th April ( this might move a few days either way ) Tough times ahead

Cardiff hospital preparing for 'huge wave' -
A senior figure at Wales' largest hospital says staff are in unchartered territory as it prepares to face "a huge wave" of coronavirus cases.
So far 14 patients have been admitted to intensive care at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff with the virus.
But Dr Richard Skone said efforts by staff so far had been monumental.
More than 800 clinicians from across different departments have been given specialist Covid-19 training.

The lack of testing in this country and lack of PPE for health workers is deeply worrying. My brother in law normally works as a fire fighter but he has been redirected to drive ambulances in London. Part of his duties are to ferry bodies from hospitals to the morgue. He says its utterly grim there and to expect huge increases in the coming days. He describes his PPE as ridiculous. You'd get more protection making sandwiches. Now is not the time for politics but when this done I think we'll know how woefully slow our government has been to react to this crisis and how their inadequate funding has cost the lives of many working for the NHS. Our country is about to be scarred for years by this.

No government will ever be completely devoid of blame in a situation like this but compared to public feeling in Italy, I think think ours are doing as nest as they can. Can you imagine how Corbyn & Abbott would have done in this situation?

you can find articles in the news papers of almost every country in Europe that contain the same sort of comments/complaints .. its not a UK thing its worldwide and because its worldwide every country is trying to source the same things . yes scarred for years, everyone everywhere ..

The case of PPE is the same in every country. It’s not usual to store PPE by the millions of units, because it has a shelf life and pandemics are extremely rare. In Cleveland, they’re looking at uv sterilisation of PPE for re-use. Boris or Corbyn, result would be the same. Easy to blame Government, but probably not deserved.

With us being so much bigger than Spain that's probably inevitable. I've just been reading that Pakistan airlines are to resume flights between Islamabad and London, Birmingham and Manchester. I cant see any justification, both countries will be well and truly in the throws of an epidemic within days / weeks. Why spread it around any more ?

Very similar figures to yesterday. Hopefully the academics are right and the lockdown should start taking effect soon. They have to shut down our cities though or it will have limited effect.

Agree with you both guys - And from next week we will see if all these measures are working - if reports are to be believed .

In Scotland, 126 patients have now died - up by 50 from yesterday.
In Wales, the total number of deaths is now 117 - a rise of 19.

Northern Ireland is actually experiencing less deaths than it normally does at this time of the year. This is partly because many of those who have died, would have died anyway from underlying health conditions, plus all the restrictions are reducing RTA's etc. If people aren't travelling they can't die in RTA's and if not out socialising, they can't die in stabbings etc (see the links in my post copied below).
The week 13 European Mortality Monitoring figures are out and only show a slight increase, but some countries are showing a decline from the normal figures including Austria, Germany and Northern Ireland. The peaks are still much higher for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 winter periods, which may mean that a lot of those who have died will have done so anyway. Also, others who would have died through RTA's etc are not dying due to restrictions in travel etc. In the three countries with lower figures, the lower contact levels may have reduced levels of those with underlying conditions who would normally have died from flu and cold type viruses.

The figures are not good but trying to put a positive spin on this 29,000 people catching the virus out of a population of 66m is significantly a lot less than 0.1% of the population.
That is to say, 99.9% of the population have not caught CV-19.
and as long as we stay indoors it will stay that way

What did we learn from today's UK press conference?
It was a longer than normal press conference today - here is what we learnt:
Health Secretary Matt Hancock set out a "five-pillar testing strategy" - this included setting a goal to reach 100,000 tests a day by the end of April
It also includes testing swabs in labs run by Public Health England; using commercial partners to increase swab testing to see who has the virus; introducing antibody tests to detect whether people have had the virus and introducing monitoring to establish how the infection is spreading through the population
The UK has bought 17.5 million antibody tests "subject to them working"
He said testing for antibodies could be done "at home with a finger prick and deliver results in as little as 20 minutes"
More than £13bn of NHS debt will be written off - Mr Hancock said this would put the NHS in a "stronger position"
He also said NHS staff who needed a test would get a test adding that this would be done "absolutely before the end of the month"
He defended his decision to prioritise testing for patients over NHS staff saying “I believe anyone in my shoes would have taken the same decision.”

The advice for going to hospital is coming far too late. People are doing what they think is right and often led by the Doctors but I've read and heard a number of stories where relatively young people have lasted barely half an hour after reaching hospital. Today the 21 year old neighbour of a work colleague had passed away by the time the got him to the ambulance. These are truly distressing times.
