I struggle with numbers? You have struggling with biff posts all day.

I had better things to do than spend all night on here. To be fair I’m questioning my judgement in coming back at all.

I have answered about crowds loads of times. Mainly it was due to success that we hadn’t had in a while (Championship was unchartered for most fans) together with an above average amount of season tickets sold due to cup finals etc. I did a long post giving our average attendance over the last 20 odd years with why I thought they were high in places.

As for Ian saying the die hards stayed for the premiership season then with no hope of bouncing back stopped going I agree with you. However you call them die hards sensible people call them glory supporters. They might have been there in the dungeon days but they were just there for the journey to the Premiership. Glory supporters. End Off (sic)

They were there in the dungeon days and for the Premier...I would not call them Glory Hunter....ever though they just might have had enough of Tan?

Had enough of Tan once we stopped winning. Funny that?

Some complete nonsense on here. Those of us who followed the club for years and years in the bottom divisions were not there for the journey to the Premiership. Back in those days just surviving in the league was an achievement in itself, and when we got out of the bottom division survival in the third tier was a success. The Championship was just a dream, and in all honesty I think a lot of us never really expected to see us playing Championship football. We were there simply because football was our sport, and Cardiff was our club.
When we got to the top, I am sure I am not the only one who had stopped going because we were playing in red. I have spent years supporting us in the basement leagues, and have still never watched us play in top flight. I am sure there are plenty of others as well. The Glory Hunters arrives for one or two years, most of them were Arsenal, Man U fans etc., and most vanished when the club returned to the Championship.

When did you start going Steve. I started in 72 when we were ripe for the top division with the likes of Toshack, Clarke and gang. Two 50,000 gates against Real Madrid and Leeds embedded into me we are big enough for the top league. It does surprise me most think we are only big enough for the Championship. A number of seasons in the Premier and I believe we will become that big club I believe we can be.

These are our average attendances and league positions over the last 20 odd years. It is based on current names so dungeon is called league 2. I have put a possible mitigating factor for large (or low) attendance in last column.

I hope this shows that Cardiff have had crowds up during success and down when not so successful for years so this season's low crowds are to be expected and nothing to do with Tan, Slade or Dai Hunt.

Year- Level & Position- Average Attendance- Historical significance
2014/15 Championship (11th) 21,124 Season tickets sold from previous year
2013/14 Premiership (20th) 27,430 First year in top tier in ages
2012/13 Championship (1st) 22,299 Season tickets sold from League cup final + success
2011/12 Championship (6th) 22,100 Large number of 'Golden' season tickets sold year before
2010/11 Championship (4th) 23.194 Bellamy + top of table most of year + play off final year before
2009/10 Championship (4th) 20,717 First season new stadium
2008/09 Championship (7th) 18,000 Last season Ninian, FA Cup Final so season ticket sales high
2007/08 Championship (12th) 13,939 Nothing season low crowds
2006/07 Championship (13th) 15,223 Top of table after 12 games so 20k crowds dropping to 12k
2005/06 Championship (11th) 11,720 Mid table nothing happening crowds sub 10k regularly
2004/05 Championship (16th) 12,976 Sam's dream started to implode. Black Friday etc.
2003/04 Championship (13th) 15,569 First year in Championship
2002/03 League 1 (6th) 13,050 Promoted via playoffs. Money spent on players + Success
2001/02 League 1 (4th) 12,253 Back in League 1 + success
2000/01 League 2 (2nd) 7,962 First year of Sam. Money spent on players + success
1999/00 League 1 (21st) 6,895 Back in League 1 but relegated. Crowds started 10k +
1998/99 League 2 (3rd) 7,131 Frank Burrows takes us up. Success.
1997/98 League 2 (21st) 3,610 Dungeon performing badly. 20k say they went actually 3k
1996/97 League 2 (7th) 3,594 Relative success but still crowds low.
1995/96 League 2 (22nd) 3,420 Hangover from relegation year before.
1994/95 League 1 (22nd) 4,543 Sat lower league most of year, inevitable relegation.
1993/94 League 1 (19th) 6,072 Spike in crowds from promotion plus Cup Run boosted league crowds.
1992/93 League 2 (1st) 8,560 Eddie May's barmy army. Money spent + success under RW.
1991/92 League 2 (9th) 6,191 First bit of relative success in ages boosted crowds. Lots of children got into the City (including me). Large crowds back end of season.

Any question, comments or concerns please feel free to add.

But now we have a great manager, perhaps the best we have had since Jimmy Scoular, although spoilt by the last 2 games it is looking like we will we could get an auto place but definitely a play off place. As Warnock says why are we not getting bigger crowds?

Because the walk up crowds, the floating fans, the ones we need to turn our hardcore (which as you can see above varies on our position) have seen us up the top of the Championship in the recent past and That’s not exciting. Warnock, although a hero to us and rightly so isn’t a big name. Sam or Ridsdale isn’t our owner making sure Our club is everywhere as was their style. We haven’t spent big on the squad or got a marquee name like Bellamy. We don’t have young Welsh players like Earnie banging them in. There just isn’t the excitement at the moment. We have done the Championship, won it by 8 points. We have played Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City.

How is Fulham or Preston going to excite people?

Re: ‘ WHAT DO YOU THINK ? ‘

Been following this debate with interest. Next to the result, the attendance has always been my main concern. That goes for any game, in any league, anywhere. As far as I'm concerned, the two go together. Blokes of my generation still talk about the Hereford game in 1976! 35k 'official' gate.

As for yesterday's crowd, it was pretty much what I expected. There were a few different faces in block 103 that I didn't recognise, which was good. I hope they will be back, although yesterday's performance won't help.

As for the rebrand, I don't think that there can be any doubt about its lasting effect. Most of us know a few long standing fans who quit, and have never been back. I know a few in north Cardiff. The promotion season and the Premier League masked it, but when normality was resumed, the damage done could be seen. The glory hunters were gone, and our core support was smaller than previously. As an aside, Scott Johnson's book on the rebrand is well worth a read. I know that some on here criticise his Echo articles, but it's actually a good account of the whole sorry episode, taken from an anti-rebrand position.

We are where we are. The Premier League proved to be a huge disappointment, followed by a couple of uninspiring mid-table seasons, not without the danger at various times of dropping into League 1. Russel Slade saved us from that, at least!

Anyway, onto Friday night's game now. My guess is about 16/17k. I booked for QPR yesterday, too. Hope we get a decent turnout there. Say 1200 to 1500?

Onwards and Upwards!

Because today was Boxing Day Allan, biggest day of the season and as u know we've been Top 3 for 5 months, and if we had had a capacity of 33,500 in the Prem, Our average would of been 32,000 approx.

Allan, Why should it be lower than previous home crowds then?

2009 v Plymouth 24,010

2010 v Coventry 24,595

2012 v Crystal Palace 26,098

2013 v Southampton 27,929

And between 13-16 we endured relegation,Ole not having a clue, Slade and the player selling and crap football and then Trollopeand his losing streak.

A lot of common sense and honesty, results, then crowds interest most football fans, the reason the same people say they don't is because ours are so poor.
Yes Scott Johnsons book well worth reading and yes the stripping of our identity is 100% one of the main reasons why we have lost many hardcore/diehard City fans. :bluescarf: :blue scarf:

Preston should be 22,000, will prob be as low as 18,000.
QPR away should be 3,000, will prob be as low as 1,500, which many lower division clubs took away on Boxing Day.

1967 BA. 50 years for my pains. In the early days I believed, like you, that we were a sleeping giant, and that the glory days were around the corner. Sadly, it never materialised, and I doubt if it ever will, not in my lifetime anyway.
As I have got older, I have accepted that I was wrong and that this club is at best a small to medium sized club. Yes, we have had some great crowds like Real Madrid, West Ham, Crystal Palace & Hereford. However, they have not been our usual gates which is why they stand out in my memory. Plenty of other clubs have had the odd few exceptional gates over the years like ourselves, but that does'nt mean they are big clubs.
I see a lot of the younger fans talk about us being a bigger club than we really are, and forever predicting us to win the league. Reminds me of exactly how I was in my younger days, but I think the older you get the more realistic things become, and I can now stand back and look at us from a more neutral point of view. That's one of the reasons why when we lose, I can often see that it was because the better team won, and that the ref is not always the reason for defeats.
If you are a younger fan, it does'nt hurt to dream, and hopefully they may get to see us playing regularly in the top flight, something I have never experienced.

Ok Neil I will ask again.

You say its nothing to do with the Rebrand, I have answered all your questions time & time again, your turn :thumbright:

HOW COME HOME CROWDS ARE STILL LOW?

HOW COME AWAY CROWDS ARE STILL LOW?

HOW COME CARDIFF CITY WERE NEARLY 5,000 DOWN ON BOXING DAY THAN WHEN MALKY WAS HERE ON THE SAME DAY?

ITS CHEAPER TO WATCH CITY NOW/MORE OFFERS/CHEAPER SEASON TICKETS & EVEN BUSSES BRINGING FANS IN, SO WHY CANT WE EVEN AVERAGE OVER 20,000 HOME CROWDS NEVER MIND 25,000 LIKE 10 OTHER CHAMPIONSHIP CLUBS & OUR AVERAGE IS DOWN ON MALKY'S SEASON?

PLUS HOW COME ONLY 1,290 CITY FANS WENT TO BURNLEY ON OUR BIGGEST AWAY GAME IN 50 YEARS TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Why is Warnock/Vince Alm and our club virtually begging more fans to turn up?

Don't worry another 10 questions waiting :D

Pal, Just simply answer here then :thumbright:

HOW COME HOME CROWDS ARE STILL LOW? as I have said we had the Premiership and have been up the top of the Championship for half a season so now it’s not new so our fans need something to get stuck into. There’s nothing to grip them. Warnock is a hero to us but he isn’t a huge name to the floating fans who are the fans we need to attract. As my post about average attendances proved this is regular for our club. We also haven’t got a large number of season tickets to rely on for bigger crowds for reasons I mentioned in my crowds post

HOW COME AWAY CROWDS ARE STILL LOW? similar to the answer above plus I’ll add once we have had away trips to Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal, Man City etc then trips to Barnsley are simply not going to be attractive. Villa away we had big numbers as that was still attractive.

HOW COME CARDIFF CITY WERE NEARLY 5,000 DOWN ON BOXING DAY THAN WHEN MALKY WAS HERE ON THE SAME DAY? golden ticket scheme meant we had more season ticket holders which meant crowds were up. Plus we were top of the Championship which was unchartered territory. Much like the crowds increased under DJ when we started the season and sat top. This was sustained success. Plus those that didn’t buy season tickets in the golden ticket scheme bought them when we spent 12 million quid in the summer. We were playing in red so it pisses over any argument you make about rebrand costing us fans.

ITS CHEAPER TO WATCH CITY NOW/MORE OFFERS/CHEAPER SEASON TICKETS & EVEN BUSSES BRINGING FANS IN, SO WHY CANT WE EVEN AVERAGE OVER 20,000 HOME CROWDS NEVER MIND 25,000 LIKE 10 OTHER CHAMPIONSHIP CLUBS & OUR AVERAGE IS DOWN ON MALKY'S SEASON?answers as above. Plus it’s not just about ticket price you add transport costs, pint, food, where to park etc. Not a lot of expendable income out there sadly

PLUS HOW COME ONLY 1,290 CITY FANS WENT TO BURNLEY ON OUR BIGGEST AWAY GAME IN 50 YEARS TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.havent got a fooking clue. Title was already won maybe. But you are using an argument that our crowds that season were bigger than now to suit yourself then using a low crowd that season to suit yourself. If I remember right that game was an early kick off and Burnley wasn’t exactly a close trip so it would have meant an early departure for a game where the result didn’t matter. I remember Scunthorpe away (I think) where thousands went as we needed to win to win title

Why is Warnock/Vince Alm and our club virtually begging more fans to turn up?ive answered that in detail why wouldn’t they? Warnock wants the fans behind the team and Vince probably staked a lot on crowds and changing back to blue and the effect it would have on crowds

Don't worry another 10 questions waiting :D

But to the diehards/ loyal City fans they never cared and went to all these smaller clubs, but we lost them. I went to the Premier away games and 60% the club say were New fans with Premier Seats allowed 4 tickets each   No Loyalty shown to old fans. These New Fans 95% of them were gone as soon as we were relegated, No care for City or Identity.

Not played Villa away this season yet.

Re: ‘ WHAT DO YOU THINK ? ‘

Wed Dec 27, 2017 2:33 pm

I said in a previous post 20% of the die hards, which in my opinion
was around 14000 from the 1980s onwards. So as many as 2800 were effected enough by the re-brand to
stop going entirely or stop regularly. Now, you
have to understand that this type of supporter were pretty fanatical which meant they spurned on others in their circle to follow City. Supporters like The Lone Gunman and Thames Valley Blue from Mike Morrises site come to mind. City supporters have always had reasons for not going in the past, however, like Annis, I cannot see any reason why the crowds are not turning up, as even the club are bending over backwards to get supporters in with low prices and a good product

Because what your saying is they did totally accept the Despicable Red and were never interested in our identity and were not wanting it back.

Funny it was said on here at the time by people like yourselves and Neil, that No one totally accepted the Red and that of course everyone wanted our identity back. Hmmm interesting?

Don’t attribute quotes to me. I didn’t say that.

A lot of our fans didn’t care. This proven by a tenth of our fans who went on the protests while the rest walked by.

That is about average 10%.

7,000 Man Utd fans went on a demonstration out of 70,000. Are you saying they didn't care? If they are you are clutching at straws here.

It was reported around 4K went on our last demonstration. I would say we were down to 22K by then perhaps less. That is a lot more than 10%.

I also know how much it hurt you and others and I bet you Tan is gutted about that. Hence he returned us to blue.

Camarada, an hours converstion and I said seven words.

Now please stop saying I always disagree with you. As seen we agree on loads.

Pal, Just simply answer here then :thumbright:

Ok Neil I will ask again.

You say its nothing to do with the Rebrand, I have answered all your questions time & time again, your turn :thumbright:

HOW COME HOME CROWDS ARE STILL LOW? as I have said we had the Premiership and have been up the top of the Championship for half a season so now it’s not new so our fans need something to get stuck into.

Nothing to grip them, unbeaten at home till yes, exciting football and TOP 2 of the Championship for 5 months :D

Season tickets are Cheaper Now than our previous 5 years, so why are they not buying them now?

Does not affect other clubs, their fans still go?

Fans have virtually the same money in their pockets as they have done in the last few years and its cheaper to watch City.

I AM SHOWING YOU THAT THE NEW GLORY FAN WONT GO TO PLACES LIKE THIS EVEN IF IT MEANS SO MUCH TO CITY, BUT WE LOST SOME OF THOSE DIEHARD FANS WHO WENT TO SCUNTHORPE.

Game was 3pm and pay on the gate / No Id /No restrictions / Massive game, City Won the Championship for the first time in our history :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Why is Warnock/Vince Alm and our club virtually begging more fans to turn up?ive answered that in detail why wouldn’t they? Warnock wants the fans behind the team and Vince probably staked a lot on crowds and changing back to blue and the effect it would have on crowds

Warnock wants to see a packed stadium and a good away support as he has been told City fans use to be like that. Warnock himself has stated he has been Disappointed by our crowds.

I spk to Vince 4-5 times a week, very upset by our low crowds and puts stuff on his FB twice a week.

Don't worry another 10 questions waiting :D

Answers in bold. I’ve answered all of them before. It’s a right pain to do on my phone. Stick the rest up your arse. I’ve indulged this once but I am not going round and round in circles because you don’t see anything unless it suits your agenda.

You make us go around in Circles as you don't accept the Rebrand caused a divide and loss of our fans.
You were never there and I attended meeting after meeting with hundreds of City fans and they were so hurt and I watched so many say thats it and have moved on.

Pal,You have to finally accept Tans/Rebrand has hurt our club more than you will ever understand :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Camarada, I never once said it didn’t hurt people but hurt our club no. It got us investment that took us up which got us a lot of money. I also agree we lost fans. Just not the numbers stated.

I also know how much it hurt you and others and I bet you Tan is gutted about that. Hence he returned us to blue.

Camarada, an hours converstion and I said seven words.

Now please stop saying I always disagree with you. As seen we agree on loads.

Take care Camarada.

I told you some real stories that went n during the Rebrand and it still hurts thinking about them, prob why I can never move on :bluescarf:

Neil, I think we understand each other :thumbright: :bluescarf: :bluebird:

There is no doubt that the re-brand has cost us a lot of support. I was one of six who were regulars for many years. Day out for us, including various pubs before getting train back home. We all stopped going once the colours were changed. Now we have reverted back to our true colours, only two, sometimes three of us bother attending. Afraid three of my mates got used to doing other things on matchdays, and have never got their enthusiasm back despite being hardcore fans for best part of forty years. I guess there are plenty more like them.

Agreed the rebrand the has cost us a lot of fans.but we have 1 million people in our catchment area. I would have thought a minium of 25000 of them would be interested in watching a team that's has been in the top two most of the season and offers very cheap tickets alas that doesn't seem to be the case.

What you say is right enough, but we have always had a big catchment area, and 25k has always been a good crowd for us. I guess we have to accept we are what we are, and what we've always been, a small/medium size club. Unless we can become an established PL club, and a club that can at least be contenders for more than just surviving in the top league, our gates will be roughly what they have always been for 50 years or more, not particularly big.
