Hi all,

whenever this subject comes up I post a link to this site:

http://european-football-statistics.co.uk/england.htm

If you click on a club it will bring up the attendances for each club from 1920-21 to the present day.

Apart from two periods 1921 - 25 ccfc div 1: scfc div 3s

and post war 1947-57 ccfc div 2 and 1 scfc div 3s and 2

The stats show there is little difference between both clubs when you take into account the respective divisions the clubs are in, ground size ccfc - 60,000 scfc - 28,000 and population. The Vetch wasn't 36,000 until 1958 when the North bank was reshaped and extended. Basically, they couldn't get anymore in, similarities with the current situation.

Yes Cardiff have on 5 occasions recorded an average attendance over 30,000 but that of course means that for every attendance of 45,000 there would have been one of 15,000.

Have a look for yourselves and enjoy a couple of hours looking at it all.

Statoswan.
But as I stated, that was mainly during the post war boom years when you were in the first division

Stats favour Cardiff though, you forgot to mention that.

There a limit to both clubs attendance. Even five years in the Champions League wouldn't see either club pressing towards 40k.

Support may grow around the world but bums on seats is finite.

It's a personal view but Swansea could sustain week on week 33k we'd probably be A few thousand more, perhaps 36 to 38k.

One thing is for sure the Jacks need to expand in order to compete. They are bottom of the average attendances below the likes of Palace but that is just down to stadium size.

Why is it a competition? Its not like only one club can expand.

The Liberty needs to be expanded, so it is going to be.

End of story.

Good post that.
Thing is with us is we are a bit on cautious side, some might say its right to build our fan base before we build our stadium.
Allso to establish our selfs before we build extensions.
This is our 3rd season in the prem and have managed to keep filling and increasing our waiting list.
The club have done things right and not waisted money by spending big .
When we built the stadium we were getting around the 6 k mark and not long before that we along with u were only getting 3.4and5 k
We planned and built our stadium in these times of small attendances so there for only needed to build a 20k.
But how many would have thought in them days we would have gone on such a successful run and do what we did.

It is probably due to the fact that twenty years ago when both clubs were in the low to mid thousands that the crowd thing is of interest. I can remember seeing but more importantly hearing the difference between 6000 and a 4000 crowd and it was a big thing then. Although the crowds were always close when in the same division Cardiff always had the potential for a "biggie". That is the most important fact in this debate squabble call it what you want. The potential of a city and the catchment area that Cardiff has will always be greater than Swansea and the surrounding area. If swans supporters think that they are eating into traditional Cardiff heartland with their increasing support they are being very short sighted. There are more sightings of Swansea shirts merchandise whatever in the valleys gwent etc but these are new supporters not ex cardiff who might go on to be lifers but it's because you got to the premier first. However they are definitely in the minority and what you have now will probably not increase whilst we compete in the same league. I think that the fact both clubs are already growing out of their stadiums is enough evidence to support expansion. Even if it's only for a couple of games a year. Leeds just close part of their East stand if the demand is not there but when they return (grudgingly) it is there and ready for bums on seats. Arguments aside surely it is good for Welsh football that we are going to have two teams with the potential to have these crowds in the next couple of years

Hi roathy

I don't know if it's Roathie, but that site is also factually incorrect. I have an official Swansea book that details every attendance from every game up until when it was published, and I once used it too prove that we had never had an average attendance above 20000 in any season. That site says 1949 was 22k something, but it was actually a little over 19k. Last season was the only season in our history that we have averaged over 20k.

It is roathy, he always does stuff like this being the 'fan who stumbled across the forum by accident'. Yeah Swansea never have had the crowds back in the day, it's only last season like you said which have seen you average over 20k. I think you could get another 4-5 in at present. Takes decades to really push up though. You never know one day both clubs may be averaging 35+
