thats again another failure of the MOD then but thats the government allowing people to throw money around likes its a game of monopoly. you cant specifically target nuclear procurement as the MOD waste their funds on all types of procurement.

Very true but a very expensive one.

well yes but some procurements are going to be more expensive than others

I dont know off hand how many missiles we have estimated around 225 warheads with 4 v boats capable of carrying 16 missiles each

the nuclear deterrent will have an overhaul because it needs to be replaced by 2020, whether we keep trident or replace it with a different system is up to the government personally id keep it. anyway thats a different matter, the point being is the fire service seems to be doing it again letting the military be a scapegoat so they can force their will on the government.

people in the public sector are losing their jobs left right and centre and they want to discuss the niceties of 2/3rds final salary pension

Have to agree that the fire service do get it good when compared to other trades. But to say it is one of the most dangerous jobs in the current climate is in my opinion not to true. When you look at the figures the most dangerous jobs in the uk are still fishing, farming and construction! The fire service isnt even mentioned in the highest casualties list of employers.
Nobody should not return from work as fit as the went, and anyone that has lost a life in there job is as important as anyone else. I for sure am not slateing the fire service but the pension is one of the best around and the country can not afford the cost of it. Im a fire fighter within the nuclear industry and I am expected to work until I decide to retire (65), If I wish to stay on the fire team I have to pass a fitness test which isnt to different from the one they are bringing in for the FS (so ive been told by our training instrustors who also train the FS)
Also I have friends in the FS taht are full time but are on call through the night, There day satarts at 10A.M I think but the get a HEATING allowance whilst they are at home before they come to work!
The starting wage of 21 grand is better than most skilled workers get when starting.

I really hope to god you don't require the fire service one day be it a fire road accident stuck in a lift overcome by carbon monoxide flooding or even a lift to hospital because the ambulance service can't attend ( and yes this happens quite a bit bet you didn't know that) also many jobs which the police pass the buck on removal of body parts after a fatal incident I could go on and on .

Reality, in the public sector there is no balancing act when considering wages and conditions, those who make the recommendations, chief officers have taken no financial risk to get they're gold plated positions and they know that all enhancements to other staff will also land up in they're pockets.... It's the family fortune public sector scenario nothing to do with history, its to do with the real world now.... WAKEY WAKEY

I regularly worked with a fireman(they were called that back then) depending on his shifts he used to turn up at our furniture re-upholstery workshop and work 3 or four days in a row. Cash in hand not on the books. As mentioned further back in the thread, it may be illegal to have a second job, but many work illegally in the black economy.

IF its so great get a job as a fireman or in the public service. why drag everyone down ? why not get better for everyone.

If I wanted to be bored stiff and believe that everybody else has to pay for me beyond 55 then I would, however I'd rather have a real job.

So a nurse is not a real job....or a care worker....come on ?
