No multiculturalism hasnt worked. 1948 is right in that there are large amounts of segregation throught out the UK amongst all the ethnicities. Humans will want to stay together with people who are like minded naturally.

Of course I do because Sharia Law conflicts with British Law. Most Muslims I know don't want Sharia Law anyway. That might be because they are younger, have grown up in Britain and see no reason for change, the fact a few of them are women will also be a key factor. There are some thing in Sharia Law I agree with such as harsh sentencing but most of it I do not. Would I want it in the UK? No. As that would then be causing a massive division in society. If a Muslim man assaults a British Christian girl? Under what law does he get tried? You would get people cheating the system to avoid harsh sentences and physical punishment. It would lead to mass corruption having two standards of law at that level.

It would be far easier to compromise and suit everyone. Make our current sentencing harsher for more serious offences. Reject the rest of the laws on the basis they conflict with human rights legislation.

As already said in this thread, people should be free to go where they want and do what they want in the world until they break the LOCAL law in that area.

What you are describing is the failing of social cohesion, which is not the same.

Social cohesion has not gone to plan. Assimilation will never happen. Immigration needs addressing. Multiculturalism has been fine.

The problem with politics at the moment is people do not understand what the terms mean. Even Cameron himself made himself look a right plonker by talking about multiculturalism and then describing social integration. Clegg is the only one who has spoken with any actual understanding of the terms and issues and how they relate. Its perhaps one of the only things he does know. Well that and lying.

what i find bizarre is that people tend to categorize people into either BNP fanatics or ultra left wing pro immigration in these debates. people even on this thread accusing others of various things and it really is embarassing that so many people in this country share that knee jerk reaction to this.

i think that with this topic we have some secret gestapo informants who wait for threads like this so they can wind people up by calling others racists when, in my experience, we are one of the most tolerant nations of different cultures in the world.

however an extra 3m or 4m people added to the UK in a decade is scary. the population of white british people is actually falling and i agree that a certain level of immigration is needed to plug the gap. i dont see why i should be forced to agree with the view that britains people becoming less british is something i should celebrate and support.

Our schools are at bursting point with the amount of foreign languages spoken, our inner cities lacking soul, British workers and craftsmen have been put out of business by Eastern Europeans looking for a quick buck. This is not the Cardiff I grew up in, Albany Road is littered with Albanian criminals.

New Labour have a lot to be sorry for, we were never asked if we wanted this change, the latest census results are startling. The boys from Somalia and the Carribean that I grew up with down the docks came here to work and make Britain there home. Today it is sadly a different story.

All governments, tory and labour, are the same. They have to show a growing economy. One way to do that is to bring in immigrants from financially poorer countries to work for lower wages. Multiculturalism in simple terms means "Ethnic diversity". YES Britain is now ethnically diverse
but many many areas are NOT. Because there are big estates in Britain full of white people, some
full of black people and some full of Asians.

britain is NOT multi cultural....we ARE multi racial......multi culture means sharing each others cultures,ways,etc......but this has not happened and never will,and the biggest reason for this is the immigrants that come to britain,do not and will not except our culture and ways........

Well, I'm 50 yr old. Left school with 11 GCSE's. Could have stayed on for my A levels
but was offered an Engineering Apprenticeship. Worked on the 'tools' as it were for
14 yrs then moved onto the Procurement side of things. I'm actually a member of the
C.I.P.S (i have letters after my name if i choose to use them) .... I could go on... But...

I have done. Worked for a few years, got bored. Wanted to get back into education and study something actually challenging. First year at university was harder than any job I had in the 'real world' as you perceive it to be. Lets not consider universities to be the real world though, all those engineers and architects, accountants and lawyers that went to university to get into their profession must be living some fantasy world.

You seem to assume that everyone who goes to university is living in some bubble kept away from reality. You do realise all types of people go to university, even some your age right? Maybe you should go. See you next Freshers.

I have done. Worked for a few years, got bored. Wanted to get back into education and study something actually challenging. First year at university was harder than any job I had in the 'real world' as you perceive it to be. Lets not consider universities to be the real world though, all those engineers and architects, accountants and lawyers that went to university to get into their profession must be living some fantasy world.

You seem to assume that everyone who goes to university is living in some bubble kept away from reality. You do realise all types of people go to university, even some your age right? Maybe you should go. See you next Freshers.

This country is famous for its natural segregation with its class system, long before immigration was a problem. For better or worse this country likes the us v them scenario.

Why arent we all just called British? because we like to segregate ourselves Welsh, English, Scottish and Irish.

Its not racist, its not ignorant people like to be around their own kind be it whether your a upper class white public school educated man or a black african working class poorly educated man.

Fear also has its part to play people like the status quo, you start messing around with that people will leave. Take Heaton in Bradford for every 1 Muslim family who moved in 3 white families moved out. Why fear, fear that the price of your house will drop, fear that your quiet life will change.

Everybody likes the idea of multiculturalism, as long as they are not the ones who have to deal with it. Same principle that everybody likes the idea of green energy but nobody wants a wind farm spoiling their view.

As for your education argument neither of you is right neither of you are wrong. An academic education will give you all the theory with none of the practical knowledge, A real world education will give you all the practical knowledge with none of the theory.
Ill give you an example, understanding the law and statistics of why and how you get mugged in the country will not give you adequate defences against actually being mugged. A real world education will give you the correct defences against a mugging but not necessarily the theory of why muggings take place.

You make a good point there but the problem is that everyone believes university is a memory and scribble down on the exam system when it is not. Most of my course is practical and assignment based because that is the best way to assess it and that's why the university is well known and has a good reputation for producing graduates in that sector.

Of course there are a lot of degrees at university where people can just revise the night before an exam and then fill it in and I agree these give students a bad name in my opinion. I believe the onus is on students to choose a degree that prepares them in the best possible way for the real world.

Before university I knew next to nothing in depth about computing. Now im fluent in PHP, XHTML, HTML5 and JavaScript. Fairly competent in Java and studying C++ now on the side. I have a strong understanding of AI and calculus and I am on course for a 1st class degree.

But taffyapple will probably tell you thats easy to obtain and nothing compared to life experience.

I'll give you a perfect example. All the statistical analysis in the world counts for shit
unless you can transfer that into practicality.

e.g. Football. No point being in possession of statistical data saying Alan Shearer is deadly
in the air, unless your going to put someone in the mix to challenge him for every ball.

All the statistics and analysis under the sun cannot mask the fact that colour/creed/religion
in Britain are (in many areas) starting to segregate. Not necessarily even consciously. But
its happening.
