Certainly, the British/English people today cannot be personally blamed for what happened in 1921, in the same way that the German people of today cannot be blamed for the atrocities of the holocaust.

But, the British establishment is a different thing, (and I include the media in that). I don't thing there is much defence made of the Nazi atrocities in Germany today, but I think the British media does have a blind spot when it comes to accepting the wrongs Britain did in places like Ireland. In fairness, it's not across the board, and in films, the other side of the story has often been put (i.e. The wind that shakes the barley; Michael Collins; Hunger; Bloody Sunday to name just a few), but I think that we raraely get that side put across in the more popular press (The Sun, The Mirror etc).

What I find is that when I put some of the points I've made above to English friends of mine, they are firstly rarely aware of the detail, but when they become aware of it, they accept that it should be more well known and that some of it is inexcusable. In fact, the approach of many of my English friends is as reasonable as you could wish for, and as a country, I have a massive fondness for England - but for me, the English media is what makes me angry, and the reason why I always support anyone but England in tournaments like the current one. In fact, some of my English friends actually feel the same about the media bombardment, and take a similar view to me.

Great chatting with you too, jtc, and all the points you make are very reasonable - if England do well, whilst I will we personally gutted, I'll be pleased for decent guys like yourself (and many others I know).

Please explain how I am a fascist for my views on the ihabitants of Eire - I am sure that individually they are nice people and I have met a few on holiday - but I jusy wish that they would get over what the "english" did to them.
