It's not lazy though if you don't want to learn the language... I don't want to learn Welsh because I live in a place where everyone speaks English, I never come across someone who speaks Welsh so (for me) it's pointless to learn it.

I don't see the point of the Welsh language bar the history it holds. I remember when I was in school, my Welsh teacher said to me "if you become a Welsh speaking priest, you get a free house". f**k me, thats a good way to persuade people into speaking Welsh.

Thank f**k they put it in Polish then or they would have been fined 50 million given the ratios of people who speak Polish and Welsh in Merthyr!!!

Few months back on Jason Mohameds show they were discussing a woman who didnt turn up to court for drink driving and her defence was the summons was not in Welsh, even though she could speak and read English. Disgrace.

I like you and I like your posts but but honestly what would happen if the welsh language was lost? We wouldn't die, we wouldn't starve? Just curious :ayatollah:

We'd be just another part of England.

Not all countries have their own language though, English is the 3rd most spoken language in the world. There are quite a few differences between Wales and England. Scottish people speak English but that doesn't make Scotland just another part of England, I know they have other 'languages' which I don't really know about but still.

We've been under English rule for hundreds of years longer than the Scots so not comparable. And anyway their language is growing in numbers every year just like us.

Hardly surprising seeing as Cardiff has the most people in any one town / city. Ratio and percentage wise Cardiff wouldnt be in the top 10 towns / citys. FACT.

What difference would that make to someone who lives in England anyway?

A lot. For a proud Welshman, I could live in Timbuckfuckingtoo and it would still make a difference.

Probably due to the fact I grew up within a stones throw of the river Taff.

Taffy was a welshman, Taffy was a thief, Taffy came into your house and stole all your beef.

"Their own language" laughable. I do speak my own language, English. The language everyone in Wales speaks and the language that all welsh speakers also speak. The fact that you are telling us what our own language is f*cking unbelievable. Laziness or just sheer competence with what we already know?

nice - clever

strange though when its the language of the british mainland and gives names to places from Dover -Dyw fa to glasgow -Glas Goch and the river afon -Avon.

I dont speak it myself - but class this as a british language that has the same right as the mongrel language that is english (taken from german, french, latin, welsh and viking).
It is also interesting to see that due to mass immigration - the english language is changing in front of our eyes - innit bruv.
Also, there are millions of £s spent on teaching english and foreign language documents in the UK today. In some parts there are many multi language signs - none being a british language - in public used buildings throughout our lands -costing millions to make.

Surely as one of the oldest languages still spoken, cymraeg should be cherished and not made extinct be all these other here today one tomorrow languages.

I've only read the OP so no idea what shite has been written

Polo - why dont you go burning books and banning music too - very narrow minded innit bruv :ayatollah:

Actually' Polo in My opinion is a very much to the point poster and I haven't seen any posts from Polo that I wouldn't agree with. Now being a Welsh speaker Myself as are my Kids I can now say Polo has posted something that I don't agree with, On the other hand He has a point with certain opinions and views. I know a lot of Welsh Speakers (first language) That are genuinely top people. However I find that some Welsh learners or Welsh speakers that English was Their first language give an arrogant's of self importance with little patriotic believe or Welsh historical knowledge, But have found a way to use the Welsh language as a way of means and personal gain, As a poster on this topic earlier has pointed out that He has bean well sorted financially by the Welsh Assembly, nothing wrong with that, But the vast sums of money that gets handed out from the WA IS OK'D by none Welsh speakers, as only around 19% of the WA are actually Welsh Speakers or learners, I have had ample opportunity to exploit avenues that would allow personal gain, But my pride only allows for genuine gain/reward on genuine input and Merritt, There are those within the WA that push for certain regulations that make Themselves look active that also justifies Their wages or monies spent ie.......... How many people are there on this board that have made a phone call to the Council/Benefit office etc....... Have been greeted by a person on the other end answering your call in Welsh?? Well I can tell you how cringe worthy it is when You/We' I'v replied in Welsh only for the person on the other end to stop you in your tracks only to have to apologise for not being able to continue the call in Welsh but they have to answer all calls in Welsh, Yet it does sound as though your call has been greeted by a seasoned Welsh speaker. What did it cost the WA to enable thousands and thousands of clerical/office workers to learn enough Welsh to answer the phone in Welsh? ok some would only use one liners like bora da, Some would be more trying by answering with a bora da Jane yma' gyich helpi chi (good morning, Jane here' can I help you?) nothing wrong with that and you cant fault the enthusiasm, But how does that enthusiasm feel when it turns to instant embarrassment when facing a genuine Welsh speaker?. Most Welsh speakers will tell you that it is just as embarrassing or disappointing to Them, as its not something They deem necessary, Yes if They were to ring a Welsh speaking establishment ie Welsh School/ S4C etc....then there would be an obvious expectation of being greeted in Welsh. So dont be disrespectful toward Welsh speakers because of a few none Welsh speaking Idiots giving it the over patriotic wish-wash to justify spending. As for Me, I'm Black and proud, And I'm proud of My Jamaican roots, But Iv never forgotten and will never forget I was born in Cardiff' There for I shall never forget I'M WELSH, and speak it!!! :old:

Re: Welsh Language

Mon Jun 04, 2012 10:55 pm

I have no gripe with the language and I plan to learn it over the next few year but my main problems are not with the language but the speakers of it. Too many welsh bi-lingual speakers use welsh as a means of communicating so that others cannot understand them specially in work places and shops. Also it does annoy me that if anything is announced its always in Welsh first, why its wastes time.

I've been working at various offices (some WAG funded) and overheard the staff answer the phones in Welsh.
When I've said 'oh you speak Welsh then?' they've replied with oh no we just had to learn to answer the phone bilingually.

As you said what on earth is the point of that?!
