So many nationalists

I am Welsh and very proud of it - I served in the RWF for 9 years and later served my country in another capacity.

However I know that my country, WALES, was never a united country we never had a King, we had Princes each owning their OWN part of wales for THEIR purpose and fighting each other (well , getting people like us to fight for them}

It was not until we were conquered by England, because they feared us so much, that WE were able to have an impact on the world.

Since then the WELSH have been major explorers, scientists, politicians etc - I do wish we could have done it alone but I do chuckle that the English made it happen!!

For such a small country we have had a significant impact on the world!!

And for Nationalism - no thanks !!

That's not entirely correct, as the Celtic Church was quite significant, and people like St David and St Patrick (he was probably Welsh, although there's ironically a question mark over St. David) did have a significant impact on the dark ages.

However, what is true is that prior to 13th Century (when the English invasion occured), not that many explorers, scientists or politicians did make a huge mark on world history - well, at least not since the days prior to the fall of the Roman Empire.

I'm not that Nationalistic myself either mind, but I do have strong Republican sentiments, but that's purely that I oppose any kind of monarchy, nothing to do with nationalism.

What I was trying to get across is that as a nation we should continue to exploite the fact that although we are part of the UK bwe have our own identity.

I wonn't bore you with an endless list of welsh people who have had amajor impact on the world as I appreciate from other posts that you are just as well aware as myself.

I do see the sense of what you're saying, as we're clearly too small to do major things ourself in the world as a country (apart from CCFC of course), and when the British Empire was a major power in the world, we got some prominence on the back of that is what you're saying (I think I've understood you correctly there, but correct me if I'm wrong), and the there's probably truth in that.

I suppose personally, I'd rather see our identity as Celtic (and by extension Celtic in the European Union rather than British) - just a preference of mine - one thing that I do have very strong views about is monarchy, and I'd like to see us get rid of that.

Luxembourg was a poor example, they have a strong banking sector. I do not see Wales being able to compete with that. The Welsh Assembly seem to be fixated with tourism, meaning that whenever we have shit summer we will have to spend the next few years in austerity.
