England-only driving message confusing, says police federation

Allowing people in England to drive to different places to exercise sends a "confusing message" to the public, a body representing police officers has said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has relaxed the exercise rules in England, saying people can “drive to other destinations" for a walk.

But in Wales, people must only exercise locally and only use the car for essential journeys. You can face being fined if you drive to a location.

The announcement has sparked some concerns people living on the border may travel to Welsh beauty spots to exercise.

Steve Treharne, chairman of the South Wales Police Federation, said this would be an "offence" under the Welsh Government rules.

But he said the prime minister's address could lead to more people breaching rules in Wales, making it difficult for the police.

"People will always be able to skirt around the guidance because it was loose," he said.

He did say the detail is released today ,people need to take a step back and read the 50 pages today ,the media have made up most of there headlines today and are a massive problem to the public..

Why tell people in a Sunday night, you can go back to work tomorrow.

Why not say it last Thursday or Friday?

It wasn't clear but they have confirmed today it's back to work on Wednesday.

You have to admit , Boris left the UK so confused yesterday and everyone really does not know exactly what are the rules now.

He did, it was a mistake, he should have done his little speech you can't include everything, then released the 50 page book straight away and taken 20 questions to clear up some of the most important points, and then said the rest is in the booklet.

I know we are in agreement, except that he should have done the lot on one day and not given the negative media with an agenda the chance to stir up shit this morning and try and confuse the country, which they did.

This is not a political statement as I quite like Boris and I have never consecutively voted for the same party, but he and his party have made a horlicks of this over the last week.

The briefings or leaks to the papers last week was like a scene from the thick of it or yes minister, purely amateur. I still don't know what Boris said yesterday. There were lots of words but not necessarily in the right order.

This is a diverse and in many ways very different united kingdom, not just the four countries but within the countries. The 3 major cities in Wales are connected through a 50 mile stretch of road with non existent mass transport. That is a totally different situation from London. None of the Welsh cities are densely populated, so a one size fits all is going to be very difficult.

If we furloughed workers but without pay or 20% I wonder if there would still be the same clamour to stay home ? Then how cocky would Sturgeon and Drakeford be telling their countrymen i have just signed another three weeks of very low pay. But they don't have that responsibility as nasty London is paying, so they can act Jonny big bollox.

The virus has gone from flu to bubonic plague over 8 weeks. We need to be reasoned. This is not a storm we can bunker down and come out when it passes, this may well be with us for a few years. We'll get better every month at treating it but only if we have an economy that can pay for socialised healthcare.

The other major factor in this little address to the nation is that this message is mainly for the people in England NOT Scotland or Wales so do expect the same rules and policies everywhere in the UK.

Has Boris possibly dropped the biggest clanger in this pandemic crisis so far by removing the Stay At Home slogan/message and replacing it with Stay Alert? That will be like a green light to all the idiots who have been abusing the lockdown rules. God help us.

Turn it round the other way
How many people will jump in the car from wales and head to England for a full day out ?

I will hold my hands up on this one Thomas - That's exactly what i said at the time could happen .

Anyone who does travel without valid reason can be stopped fined and turned around? The rule here is still "stay local" no doubt some will try though personally I think it's madness to relax rules by zones imho,either all stay as we were,or all follow the same path as England, what a mess!!!
