To be quite honest, I don’t care. I’ll go to watch them on my own if necessary.

It costs more to travel to watch city than match day tickets. Me and a mate had a season ticket for the last 13 years but since the rebrand we just pick and choose our games. Recently though we have been coming to more home games so hopefully promotion or not we will probably buy a season for next season in the ninian stand ( if the b@@@@@d stewards ) behave :bluescarf: :banghead:

Given our league position, the rebrand reversed and the quality of the manager, todays attendance should have been around 25K

Thank you Sense/Honesty at last from a Real Old-timer :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

And we disagree on many things.

Annis, you know how much the crowd debate annoys me but am going to agree with you on this. What I will say it's the rebrand and the premiership hangover. Today proved we have lost a lot of fans, I was surprised but the proof in the pudding.

What I will say is that it's improving and eventually it will return but it's going to take a lot longer than we thought, extra new fans don't just fall out of the sky when your in the championship. Still over 21,000 is something I could only dream of growing up watching the city.

Gareth, I have said it for years, the Rebrand has hurt our club far more than many realise and it will take many years.

You are right when we think back to Div 4 days 1,500-4,500 home crowds , We have come a long way, 17 years of success on the pitch.

But what worries me is that, we have the potential for big crowds and they are not returning.
Todays home crowd lowest for years on Boxing Day.

2009 v Plymouth 24,010

2010 v Coventry 24,595

2012 v Crystal Palace 26,098

2013 v Southampton 27,929

2017 v Fulham 21,662

5,000 less than malkys boys, 3pm ko low cost. Proof in pudding. Let's move on and get back to where we were at.

How does that prove it was because of the rebrand? That crowd was when we were rebranded playing in red.

It was the top of the league (success) that did it. Yes we were 2nd but then we were Wolves not whoever was fighting for 2nd behind us. We had not tasted that so were excited plus had spent a lot of money in the summer. We also had a lot of season ticket holders legacy of the Ridsdale era.

epping blue wrote:What do you think ? Disappointed. Really thought today it would be more. I almost feel like the crowds are going down as the season progresses. Of course their not in actual figures but less than 2,000 more than fixtures a couple of months ago is considerably less than the uplift I would have expected for a Christmas fixture.

I'm less interested in comparing us with other clubs but we're comparing poorly with our own past figures. When we went up 2013 we had a similar set of fixtures. Home the week before xmas, away to Leicester on the 23rd and then home on Boxing day and the following weekend. The 3 home games attracted 26k and our attendance were without doubt depressed that year due to the rebrand. This were down at least 6k on that average and to be honest Friday is looking a bit grim. 2 games on tele don't help but its not enough of an explanation.

The ticket office could perform better. More staff to answer the phones in lead up to big games and leaving the family stand with 20 or so single seats for sale on e ticketing from first thing on Friday morning until the evening of xmas eve was shocking. That said it would have been tinkering at the edges, its a minor issue and not the fundamental reason for the lack of support.

I have no idea what the fundamental reason is for is. There is of course no single reason. I have puzzled though on the various Wembley games and in particular the additional tickets we were given. Like many on here no doubt, I had multiple tickets for all the games - indeed for the initial Barnsley semi final because I had 2 season tickets I got 7 tickets in total. I'm a bit embarrassed to say that none of the people I took became attendees of the Cardiff City Stadium ( Ninian ) other than my son who held the other season. Worse 2 of them will have seen City play more at Wembley than in Cardiff although one of those has probably seen about 50 away games in the at 10 years. What did everyone else do with those spare Wembley tickets and did they yield any long standing fans from them ?

Depressed due to rebrand? We had our biggest crowds for years after the rebrand.

I stopped going regularly after the Cup Final and because of people going who had never been City fans getting tickets. 7 or us were Ninian Park regulars and went away a lot but only one of us could get two tickets so we watched it in Canton. Only one of us has been regularly since.

I have answered about crowds loads of times. Mainly it was due to success that we hadn’t had in a while (Championship was unchartered for most fans) together with an above average amount of season tickets sold due to cup finals etc. I did a long post giving our average attendance over the last 20 odd years with why I thought they were high in places.

As for Ian saying the die hards stayed for the premiership season then with no hope of bouncing back stopped going I agree with you. However you call them die hards sensible people call them glory supporters. They might have been there in the dungeon days but they were just there for the journey to the Premiership. Glory supporters. End Off (sic)

They were there in the dungeon days and for the Premier...I would not call them Glory Hunter....ever though they just might have had enough of Tan?

Had enough of Tan once we stopped winning. Funny that?

I would have loved the attendance to be bigger say - 25,000 but it has improved with the half season ticket sales and walk up crowd. It was a real shame we lost because a win can spur on newbies returni BUT you could notice the stadium was fuller and if we can get back to winning ways quick it'll stay like this IMO and rise!

Re: ‘ WHAT DO YOU THINK ? ‘

Wed Dec 27, 2017 10:14 am

Don't think the rebrand has had much effect on the crowds, think its used as an excuse not to go personally , crowds were high when we were in red in title winning season and the premiership (funny that)

Personally I think the crowds are lower because we have recently been to the premiership and alot of people enjoyed the thrill of the chase back then, and now the novelty has worn off with some cant be bothered to come until back in the premiership .
Also we had Slade/Trollope after we were relegated and the football was dire to watch and we were near the wrong end of the table so would have lost fans .
Now Warnock is here and we are right end of the table, I believe attendances will increase if we are still near the top feb/mar onwards.
My point is I think we have more fairweather/Glory fans than we would like to admit.

Re: ‘ WHAT DO YOU THINK ? ‘

Come on, come on, come on

The rebrand severely damaged us and will take a decade to recover. (Plus the tan/Malky saga)
It divided and conquered.
Some left straight away
Some took longer
Some even longer

Tan outs, traditionalists, acceptors, etc etc.

We were on our way to establishing a strong fan base.
That has gone.
1000's have gone - they ain't coming back

21k in the current situation is good.

I went to my great mates funeral last week and at least 50 home and away fans in there who never go now.

Buzz killed.

Bring back standing

Get a buzz back

Make people want to come

(Not many fans can keep sitting still for 90mins watching modern football- it's boring) we need our football days back

Soulless bowls with empty seats are everywhere.
Tried to disown the working poor from the game and not enough better off families to replace them

These are our average attendances and league positions over the last 20 odd years. It is based on current names so dungeon is called league 2. I have put a possible mitigating factor for large (or low) attendance in last column.

I hope this shows that Cardiff have had crowds up during success and down when not so successful for years so this season's low crowds are to be expected and nothing to do with Tan, Slade or Dai Hunt.

Year- Level & Position- Average Attendance- Historical significance
2014/15 Championship (11th) 21,124 Season tickets sold from previous year
2013/14 Premiership (20th) 27,430 First year in top tier in ages
2012/13 Championship (1st) 22,299 Season tickets sold from League cup final + success
2011/12 Championship (6th) 22,100 Large number of 'Golden' season tickets sold year before
2010/11 Championship (4th) 23.194 Bellamy + top of table most of year + play off final year before
2009/10 Championship (4th) 20,717 First season new stadium
2008/09 Championship (7th) 18,000 Last season Ninian, FA Cup Final so season ticket sales high
2007/08 Championship (12th) 13,939 Nothing season low crowds
2006/07 Championship (13th) 15,223 Top of table after 12 games so 20k crowds dropping to 12k
2005/06 Championship (11th) 11,720 Mid table nothing happening crowds sub 10k regularly
2004/05 Championship (16th) 12,976 Sam's dream started to implode. Black Friday etc.
2003/04 Championship (13th) 15,569 First year in Championship
2002/03 League 1 (6th) 13,050 Promoted via playoffs. Money spent on players + Success
2001/02 League 1 (4th) 12,253 Back in League 1 + success
2000/01 League 2 (2nd) 7,962 First year of Sam. Money spent on players + success
1999/00 League 1 (21st) 6,895 Back in League 1 but relegated. Crowds started 10k +
1998/99 League 2 (3rd) 7,131 Frank Burrows takes us up. Success.
1997/98 League 2 (21st) 3,610 Dungeon performing badly. 20k say they went actually 3k
1996/97 League 2 (7th) 3,594 Relative success but still crowds low.
1995/96 League 2 (22nd) 3,420 Hangover from relegation year before.
1994/95 League 1 (22nd) 4,543 Sat lower league most of year, inevitable relegation.
1993/94 League 1 (19th) 6,072 Spike in crowds from promotion plus Cup Run boosted league crowds.
1992/93 League 2 (1st) 8,560 Eddie May's barmy army. Money spent + success under RW.
1991/92 League 2 (9th) 6,191 First bit of relative success in ages boosted crowds. Lots of children got into the City (including me). Large crowds back end of season.

Any question, comments or concerns please feel free to add.

Do you seriously think that more people started following Cardiff because they played in Red than left because they no longer played in blue ? I know a relatively small number who stopped going completely at that time. I know loads who continued to support the club through gritted teeth. I don't anyone who fully supported / embraced the rebrand.

Our crowds held for a number of reasons. We had very recent short term success and to be fair to Tan at that point in time he made promotion to the premiership a case of WHEN and not IF. It was inevitable that we would go up. Lets be honest Peter Ridsdale's price freeze was a master stroke.

Its all history now though. Despite all the negativity surrounding the club in the last 5 years; The rebrand, the tainted promotion, the relegation, the lean Slade years - signifying a lack of ambition, I thought as soon as we turned the corner and the club was looking forward the crowds would return. Its probably now less about getting old fans to return and more about getting new fans to start following the City. I would have thought they would have by now.

But now we have a great manager, perhaps the best we have had since Jimmy Scoular, although spoilt by the last 2 games it is looking like we will we could get an auto place but definitely a play off place. As Warnock says why are we not getting bigger crowds?

No I don’t think more fans started following us because we played in red than stopped for the same reason and Darran didn’t say that. That would be ridiculous. A small number stopped due to the rebrand. They were replaced by new fans who started following the team at the top of the Championship who had just spent big to get promotion. Then even more fans were added when we went up to the Premiership.

Colour of kit had a negligible effect on crowds. Probably about 50/100 stopped out of protest. Many more came through gritted teeth but were happy to have investment and a decent side. A larger chunk didn’t give a rat’s arse what colour we were in.

You carry on Annis we all know numbers make the world go around.

Personally I'm a half a dozen and dozen guy.

Ian :thumbright:

I love crowd debates :thumbright:

A pity Neil won't answer why are crowds are low,but just keeps coming back at my posts asking questions, which I reply to everyone :thumbright:

Numbers are a massive importance to everything in this world :thumbright: :thumbright:

Don't worry about Neil. He struggles with numbers once he has used up all his fingers and thumbs.

I struggle with numbers? You have struggling with biff posts all day.

I had better things to do than spend all night on here. To be fair I’m questioning my judgement in coming back at all.

Funny that?

Some complete nonsense on here. Those of us who followed the club for years and years in the bottom divisions were not there for the journey to the Premiership. Back in those days just surviving in the league was an achievement in itself, and when we got out of the bottom division survival in the third tier was a success. The Championship was just a dream, and in all honesty I think a lot of us never really expected to see us playing Championship football. We were there simply because football was our sport, and Cardiff was our club.
When we got to the top, I am sure I am not the only one who had stopped going because we were playing in red. I have spent years supporting us in the basement leagues, and have still never watched us play in top flight. I am sure there are plenty of others as well. The Glory Hunters arrives for one or two years, most of them were Arsenal, Man U fans etc., and most vanished when the club returned to the Championship.

Because today was Boxing Day Allan, biggest day of the season and as u know we've been Top 3 for 5 months, and if we had had a capacity of 33,500 in the Prem, Our average would of been 32,000 approx.

Allan, Why should it be lower than previous home crowds then?

2009 v Plymouth 24,010

2010 v Coventry 24,595

2012 v Crystal Palace 26,098

2013 v Southampton 27,929

2017 v Fulham 21,662

And between 13-16 we endured relegation,Ole not having a clue, Slade and the player selling and crap football and then Trollopeand his losing streak.
It's about success and the years you chose to highlight were good times.

Of course not everyone was. But some obviously were as they only stopped going after relegation. We gained and lost a lot of ‘Premiership’ fans but kept some and lost some others.

That’s football and that’s life.

My point though (backed up by some of our biggest crowds in the Championship being in red) is that rebrand had a neglible overall effect in crowds and in fact increased them because the rebrand brought success.
