The worry for many of us is that we have seen all this before. When Goldstone was chairman we went from chasing promotion to the top flight to selling anyone we could get money for, subsequently plummeting down to the bottom division and almost dropping out of the league. Gates around 2,000 and a standard of football that was so poor that todays team look like Barcelona compared to then. Perhaps we are worrying about a repeat of those days as the signs are there.

Living above our means for years and this is what happens soon as tan appointed SLADE most knew with half a brain cell what was coming with his stripping of assets and parachute payments. It was obvious back then but even more so now as it's been said for months on end we are having a fire sale.

Terrible decision. IMHO Connolly is the second best centre half at Cardiff. He is also good cover for right back.

Decent solid dependable championship centre back. Will rarely get an 8 but rarely a 6 or less. Decent in the air, not a natural but can do a decent job at fb. A very good move by Watford. Best quality is his attitude, he won't let you down

Cardiff City defender Matt Connolly joins Watford in shock loan move

Defender Connolly is the latest Cardiff player to leave the club on loan despite figuring in recent first-team matches

Matthew Connolly has made a shock loan move to Watford – just days after starting for the Bluebirds in Championship action.

Connolly, part of the promotion-winning side under Malky Mackay, had been a regular under Russell Slade and featured for Cardiff in Tuesday night’s draw with Bournemouth.

Yet he has been allowed to leave South Wales to join Championship rivals Watford on loan until the end of the season.

Primarily a centre-back, Connolly has operated at right-back and made 26 appearances this year having originally signed for the club from QPR in a £500,000 deal in 2012.

The 27-year-old made it a hat-trick of Premier League promotions at Cardiff City Stadium having also gone up with QPR and Reading.


The move to the promotion-chasers will shock Cardiff fans given his first-team status, Slade having overseen the exit of a number of stars since his appointment in October as part of what has been described as a need to slash the club’s wage budget.

Connolly, who had been expected to keep his place in the side for Saturday’s visit of Birmingham, has two years remaining on his Bluebirds deal.

A Cardiff City statement said: "We have accepted a loan offer for Matthew Connolly from Watford FC.

"Matthew will link up with the Hornets immediately, subject to international clearance. The emergency loan spell will run until June 1st 2015 inclusive.

"We wish Matthew the very best of luck during his time at Vicarage Road."

That is the icing on the cake, we are going backwards, whilst he is not best we have, he always gave 100% and can play in many positions, our loss and Watford's gain and good luck to him getting yet another promotion to the Premier the big question now, who is going to next. I was about to renew my ST but I think I may wait a bit longer because we may not have a team next year or could be like Blackpool starting the season with only 8 players

I think you'll find this goes way beyond 8 games.

I suspect he may be gone at the end of the season anyway. Watford probably want him as a "lucky charm" - he has already been promoted twice with Reading and us. Either way, he'll be back playing for a Championship club next season - definitely out of his depth at Premier League level.

As somebody else said, lets give the youngsters a chance over the next few weeks.

Anyway, we still have Kevin Theophile-Catherine to come back from loan and play for us next year!

KTC won't be back. On premiership level wages so will be sold as quickly as possible.

Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed. OK at centre back but no good at going forward so he struggles at full back. Generally OK but a lot better out there. Clearly a short term move as if you do go up you will want a lot better in the PL.

Could it be that connolly has gone purely to save on wages till end of season and we cant go up or down and doing Watford a favour in return for a favour in the summer transfer window? Just a theory or maybe just hoping to see some sense in this deal

thanks for the input folks. not sure he will start if we go 4 at the back, as ekstrand and angel would start as cbs and we have a wealth of talent at right back. might start in a back three, but depends how bad cathcarts injury is.

While I think Slade is a complete idiot I disagree, if it means we save 200k then brilliant, especially if it means it goes into the pot next season for players. I don't think it send any message as id hope most these players will be going anyway, the days of big wages and big signings are hopefully over.

So alternative is do nothing wait until summer then play musical Chairs with players in and out all summer! Players go where they feel they fit in with right contract of course, trouble with fans on here they think we are such crap club nobody wants or will come here ? Such balderdash they will come regardless as long as its right for them

Have'nt really got a lot of choice, the club has to reduce it's debts somehow. Just hope people remember the last time we had to sell anyone of value and bring in bargain players, we almost became a non league club. Everyone needs to lower their expectations, because success next season will be staying in the Championship, even if it's only by a point or two.
