Cardiff City Analysis: Hero Aron Gunnarsson haunts ex-boss Malky Mackay as Russell Slade's men enjoy away day
On a night that was so special for Wigan boss Malky Mackay it was a cruel irony that one of his best Cardiff City signings, Aron Gunnarsson was the man who sunk him
Wigan 0-1 Cardiff City
“In football, time moves quickly,” wrote Malky Mackay in his Wigan programme notes.
As the current man keeping the Cardiff City manager’s chair warm, Russell Slade may well have nodded his approval after the Bluebirds’ winless run came to an end at the expense of their old boss.
Mackay was referring to his time at Cardiff without referring to how it ended and what followed.
Slade would perhaps just be acknowledging the last two weeks as the run of draws, be they dour or dogged, finally came to an end with a win to put a positive spin on things.
Not that this was a performance that suddenly had anyone proclaiming that all is well in Cardiff’s world and a late, coupon-busting push to the play-offs await.
Far from it, as another display devoid of much great quality, creativity or attacking inspiration – aside from the key goal from Aron Gunnarsson – was offered up by the Bluebirds.
The difference is that, for a team that was once eyeing a repeat of the promotion Mackay led them to two years ago, the situation required just getting a win. They did that by being basic, by being unspectacularly solid, by getting the job done and ensuring the looks over the shoulder aren’t anywhere near as worrying as it stands.
And why not? Given the terrible state of the team just a few weeks ago, getting points on the board was a necessity and, with four draws and one win from their last five, Slade has done that.
