Well top 12 makes no sense, same as top 20. Ok... So why do they have to tables for the premier league, the top ten and the bottom half? It's how it's done. If someone finished 13th id say they finished in the bottom half. The same goes if someone finished tenth, I would say it was a top 10 finish.

Have you ever heard it used for a top 11 finish? Thought not. It's used ample times for a top ten finish. Makes sense seeing as there are 20 teams in the league.

Let's go for facts:
1 The Premier League has 20 teams each year.
2 There is an officially recognised relegation zone (places 18-20).
3 There is a Champions League Zone (places 1-4)
4 There is a place in Europa League (5th)

That's it!!

The only place you will see the table split in half is on TV sports programmes and some newspapers. You can argue all you like, but the truth is that the places between 17th and 6th can have varying degrees of differentiation each year. Often, there will be a "tier" of safe clubs anywhere above 18th where the clubs are clearly superior that year. As it happens, the scrap seemed to change this year due to volatile results where "lower" clubs like us and Sunderland beat "upper" clubs. This doesn't mean "top" half, it means "upper" tier for that year, at that point in the season.


To widen this concept, apply it to the pop charts. It is common it talk about the top 10' the top 20' the top 40 and the top 100. Everyone understands that if you are number 14 in the charts, you are in the top 20 comfortably. If you "chart" at 78, this is a top 100 position.

Now back to the PL:

All 20 clubs were top 20 of the league. That is not a joke. It is a fact.
All clubs finishing 1st to 17th qualified for next year. Fact.
Man United finished below the top 5 (in their eyes, a disappointment). They could be described as being in the bottom part of the table in respect of their failure to secure European football next year via league qualification. Fact (although stretching a point).
Swansea finished in the top 12 of the PL. Fact.
Swansea finished in the bottom 12 of the PL. Fact.
Cardiff finished in the top 20. Fact.
Cardiff finished last in PL. Fact.

If Roathie predicted that Swansea would get a top half finish, then he is clearly wrong, but only by 2 league places. OGS set a target/prediction of finishing above the Swans, which was also wrong, by a country mile.

Read back through other posts by other members and see how many agree with you. Does that say something to you?

Stick to the topic please. I want proof of this 'top 12' phrase in the premier league league table as I've never heard of it used. If you can find a quote or a source then I'll accept it. I've only ever known a top half and bottom half of the table. In the case of the premier league, the top ten and bottom half.

I can vouch for that Roathie. In poker we alwas say top eight in a ten seater. Think people argue just because they want to grasp on to anuything to prove you wrong. f*cking embarassing to read.
