Full Time.

Would rather us concede those goals and have a competitive fixture than win convincingly :ayatollah:

Result: Cardiff City defeat non-league Forest Green Rovers by single goal
Forest Green Rovers Anthony Barry and Cardiff City's Jordon Mutch battle for the ball during a friendly match on July 24, 2013

Cardiff City's forward duo of Nicky Maynard and Andreas Cornelius combined well in the opening exchanges of the game, with their movement causing problems for their non-league opponents.

It didn't take long for the Premier League newcomers to open the scoring, as Cornelius scored his first goal for the club in the 16th minute by heading home Kevin McNaughton's sumptuous cross.

The home side thought they had equalised through Ben Wright as the game approached the half-hour mark, but the referee disallowed the goal after spotting a foul.

Five minutes later, Cornelius' strike partner Maynard poked home Kim Bo-Kyung's cross to double Cardiff's advantage.

However, James Norwood stetched out to poke the ball home and pull a goal back for the home side with half time approaching.

Malky Mackay made eleven changes to his side at half time, and it took just seconds for them to extend their lead to two goals once again in the second half. Joe Mason was felled in the penalty area and Peter Whittingham stepped up to regain the two goal advantage.

The Blue Square Bet Premier side once again reduced the deficit through Danny Wright, although Craig Noone's marvellous strike from 25 yards once more extended Cardiff's lead.

Forest Green Rovers refused to be beaten though, and Matty Taylor fired home the seventh goal of the evening to serve up a tense finale for the 1,358 spectators at The New Lawn.

Cardiff threatened on the break as the home side probed for an equaliser but the Bluebirds held on to secure an entertaining win.

Not bad. :ayatollah:

Sorry but conceding 3 against that level of opposition is poor.
We seem to have goals throughout the side again, but the defence as we all know, needs more quality.

Didn't a non league team beat derby 7-1 last pre season? means f**k all have a look through the papers tomorrow and through pre season at the friendly scores...

It's a pre-season friendly. Spurs lost against Sunderland drew against Swindon.

Newcastle lost SIX one to Leyton Orient in 09/10, they ended up comfortably winning the Championship. :ayatollah: :malky:

Exactly, it's nice to win pre-season friendlies and have that confident, but I agree entirely, it's all about experimenting and finding a formula that suits us best, exactly, if we won comfortably we wouldn't have had players trying as much.

Preseason friendlies are glorified training sessions for the players and staff, entertainment for the fans. Win Win

My post was not meant to sound negative. Fully understand these games are an excellent tool for MM to tinker away.
I do still think that FGR are non league and with respect they shouldn't be putting 3 past us friendly or not. Many of our players are competing for the shirt. I do sincerely hope MM finds the players he's looking for especially at the back.

If you think about it FGR start their season relatively soon so are more match fit and eager to play and make themselves secure a starting berth. They will prove themselves in the later pre-season fixtures. He will, I hope so anyway

Sounds like an entertaining start to season

To all those moaning about us conceding 3 to one of the Conference FAVs for promotion :o Luton beat Villa last night, 2-0 I think. They must be doomed already, even with Benteke starting they couldn't score against a non league side? :laughing5:

With Villa now bound to go down, at least it means we are only battling to avoid two other spots :malky:

Some fans are unbelievable!

Good shout, Benteke could get a few games in the development squad to get his confidence back, waiting for his chance behind Acorn & Rudy :ayatollah:
Strong rumours that Villa released quite a few of last nights team today, for bringing the club into disrepute by losing to a non league side in a completely meaningless friendly ! Our fans eh?

Just got home.

we played twodifferent teams in each half. Joe Mason and Rudy played hall the second hall each.
Both halves we played 442, so there seemed a big gap between defence and midfield.

However Ive never seen our players looking so fit at the start of the season. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :malky:
