Agreed there mate but I'msure that they would sort something out by the time it would all be built

Severnside airport should have been developed years ago as it would have good transport links and Bristol will always have problems with long haul flights due to their short runway.

Cardiff Airport is simply a lost cause which will never catch up with Bristol and will never have the catchment area to do so. If the management had a bit more foresight when the low cost revolution began then it might be a different story but you can't turn back the clock.

In reality there is no airport in Wales. A few flights and thats it.

Cardiff International Airport? I've seen better set ups from 1950's films covering the RAF and WWII.

Only country (?) in Europe that has a terminal built to look like a garden shed.

Worded differently but exactly what I was going to say.
The buses aren't being used even at busy times.

It dropped the international bit some years ago now.

The best thing they could do for that airport (except relocating it) would be to run a railway connection off the Swansea to London mainline via Barry. Imagine Intercity express trains pulling into a newly built Cardiff Airport railway station. Crazy idea? Not so. Our mighty, industrial forefathers left us a secret weapon.

Think you know Wenvoe? Think again. A lot of Cardiff people don't know this but there is a one-mile long railway tunnel running under Culverhouse Cross interchange in a north-south direction. It used to connect the Swansea-London mainline to Barry Docks. It was built in 1888 but closed in the sixties under the Beeching cuts. The tunnel is still there and there is no reason why it couldn't be refurbished and used again.

http://www.ukurbex.com/index.php?/topic/128-wenvoe-tunnel-south-glamorgan-10/

Here's the idea:

A spur line gets built running from just west of St Fagans, south through the tunnels at Wenvoe, then joining the line at Barry. This would just be resurrecting old railway lines that existed decades ago. Intercity trains could now pull in at Barry Station.

Then a short spur line would also need to be built from west of Barry station to the Airport. (Feasibility studies have already been carried out into this by Professor Stuart Cole and the University of Glamorgan).

By doing this, everyone living along the M4 corridor from London to Swansea and beyond would have direct rail connection into Cardiff Airport and it would put Barry on the map, bringing with it significant economic benefits. As I say, the upshot would be Intercity Express trains pulling into Cardiff Airport on the hour in both directions.

Question: Would it add much journey time getting from Swansea to London? Well, don't forget they are talking about electrifying the line between London to Cardiff at least - and it is claimed that that will shave a big chunk off the journey time, so what you lose by going via Cardiff Airport you gain by electrification. Simples.

Yes it would need lots of planning permission and buying up of land etc, but it is surely better than watching the airport (and hence the region) dying on its feet. Besides I am sure Mr B Dickinson Esq would like to see his new airline succeed too and this could be just the ticket.

Apparently its the Sunday service that's going! And also WAG is going to start an express service from August! So this thread is slightly misleading apparently?

Isn't the airport actually making a profit albeit a small one....?
