Mad thing is they were being battered up until then.

Bellingham with two class goals, Ned; but both team efforts and Kane selfless for the second

Then Mexico go get a lifeline!

1-2 now!

Chris, I've said all tournament that Kane and Bellingham will always deliver for them because they are two genuine world class players.

But England are so weak defensively.

HT: Mexico 1-2 England

Mexico have been the better team overall but trail.

Pickford with a couple of outstanding saves to help England lead.

A great first half and Mexico unlucky not to be in front; but a great performance by England under the circumstances; and particularly from Bellingham and Pickford

Half time: Mexico 1 - 2 England

Gordon plays that cheap trick too often for my liking, refs should be picking up on it

Quansah sent off for England.

Definitely the right decision.

One position they didn’t want a red in

They can't have any complaints though, that's a clear red card.

Penalty for England.

Anthony Gordon brought down by the goalkeeper.

Some game this.

Re: Mexico v England " FIFA World Cup 2026 "

Mon Jul 06, 2026 2:21 am

100% red card, albeit an unlucky one!

Now Gordon gets a (definite) penalty for England!

Harry Kane scores the penalty.

England lead 3-1 with about 40 minutes to go, but down to ten men.

Definite penalty and a good take from (surely soon to be now) Sir Harry Kane!

England have taken a bit of pressure off themselves right now and couldn’t have timed that better!

What a game; and a great decision to stay up for it! :occasion5:

Mexico are going to lose their heads unfortunately

And now a penalty to Mexico. Foul by Kane.

Re: Mexico v England " FIFA World Cup 2026 "

Mon Jul 06, 2026 2:31 am

Raul Jimenez scores the penalty.

3-2 to ten man England with just over 20 minutes to go.

Can’t stand the commentators

“Let’s hope the VAR doesn’t get involved” when an England player is accused of elbowing

Re: Mexico v England " FIFA World Cup 2026 "

Mon Jul 06, 2026 2:35 am

I’m not sure that was a ‘real’ penalty, but it’s in line with others in this World Cup

Shearer is right with his ‘not a clear and obvious error’ comment, but it’s footballing Law to say England won’t make it easy for themselves! :laughing6:

2-3 to England at the advertising (ahem, drinks) break!

I think if Mexico equalise then they win this.

But whatever happens, probably the game of the tournament so far.

I was surprised he went to the screen. Wouldn't have reversed it if he'd given the penalty on field but didn't think it was a clear and obvious error.

Referee under huge pressure from the Mexico players and fans though.

100% Ned; but apparently, he is the only referee to stick with his on field decision so far in this World Cup; sadly not in this game, though!

A proper rearguard action from England and this us as goid a game for pure excitement as we’ll see; and it’s not finished yet!

11 minutes added time (which seems about right)

FT: Mexico 2-3 England

An incredible match at the Azteca and it ends with ten man England progressing to the quarter finals.

They will play Norway next.

What a game and what a result! Will surely go down as one of the great performances for England and in the World Cup competition

Can’t begrudge England their moment there; it was one heck of a performance at one if the toughest stadiums in the world!   :occasion5:

Would not want to be the Mexico manager right now. Can’t imagine their fans are happy with how he set up against 10, it was aimless

Credit where due to England. That was a good performance and they showed great spirit too.

Re: Mexico v England WIN " FIFA World Cup 2026 "

Fairplay England did the job when seemingly everything went against them, even though both decisions were by the letter of the law correct, the penalty was incredibly harsh and I don't there was any attempt to do that with the red card. If your foot rolls over the top of the ball your sort of screwed

Very soft pen for Mexico and Quansah was a yellow for me - should VAR pick up he got ball first?

I've always thought that type of foul should be a yellow, as he was playing the ball and clearly didn't mean to go over the top of it. I think VAR will call that regardless of the touching the ball as it's a high tackle at the end of the day
