Boris Johnson will return to Downing Street with a big majority after the Conservatives swept aside Labour in its traditional heartlands.

With just a handful of seats left to declare in the general election, the BBC forecasts a a Tory majority of 78.

The prime minister said it would give him a mandate to "get Brexit done" and take the UK out of the EU next month.

Jeremy Corbyn said Labour had a "very disappointing night" and he would not fight a future election.

Great the country can move on now and Corbyn is no more. However, there is nothing beautiful this morning about a hard right government having a landslide majority gifted because of a single issue. This country needs to have a decent opposition that holds any government to account. Brexit is not done just because we are leaving and there are massive problems with under funded public services.

Perhaps all those people who thought the population was too thick to know what they were voting for in the referendum will finally accept that they were wrong. Brexit played a big part in this election. We even had a party who were promoting themselves on the back of revoking article 50. Despite an overwhelming outcome to this election, I expect we will still have the noisy minority telling us all we don't know what we are doing, but with a result like this they can hardly ask for another vote. There will always be a large percentage of gullible people who believe the sort of fantasies that Corbyn promised, but I was surprised that perhaps that percentage is less than I thought.

Labour can come back from this, but not if they persevere with the sort of leadership they have now - Corbyn, McDonnell, Abbot etc. Those three were a dream come true for the Tories, who in theory should have been well beaten given the general discontent in this country in recent years. I think Labour missed a trick many years back when they choose the wrong Miliband brother to lead their party. They may well have gone from strength to strength with a good leader, but as has been normal for many years, they shot themselves in the foot. I'm not jumping for joy at the thought of a Tory government for the next five years, but I'm afraid the opposition were totally unelectable.

They will spend the next 5 years complaining, then vote for the same thing expecting different results. A bit like Wales in general, complain about all the things that have been devolved and are run by Welsh Labour, keep voting them in and expect things to change. I certainly wasn't brainwashed by the media. The anti-Brexit BBC, the anti-Brexit rags like The Guardian, The Independent, The Mirror etc., all failed to brainwash me. I still voted Conservative because I believe in democracy and that the referendum should have been respected first time around. I am a floating voter and would consider Labour next time depending on their policies and leadership.
