You can do everything can't you. Maybe you can introduce yourself to Annis in Welsh.

"Prynawn da Annis, syt wyt chi?".

:old:

You claimed to do so too... But looking at how you wrote it there, you clearly can't

I can speak it to a degree I said. Yet again Chuckles you have turned this thread about you again throwing insults around.

Not at all. I'm training (later in life!) to be a man of the cloth! It's optional, but I have always been interested in languages :ayatollah:

Typical of the backward mindset of Wales really. We are moving in a Global age and the population is being pushed into speaking a language no-one else uses!!!! No wonderno-one wants to invest in Wales with this type of mindset in the ruling classes

Are you really saying that speaking Spanish which a huge percentage of the world has it for a first language is more pointless than a language like Welsh which only a few thousand speak..?

Re: What Is The Point Of The Welsh language?

The teaching of the welsh language in my school was terrible.

Re: What Is The Point Of The Welsh language?

Tue Dec 04, 2012 7:26 am

When I was a small child, 40 years ago, Welsh was being taught in Welsh schools.
So the Rain Mans bollocks about the 'ruling elite' forcing the language down our
necks is bollocks. Its always been there.

Since the 60's and the surge in Welsh Nationalism, the language has continued to
grow. Welsh Nationalism? Hmmmmm... if the Liverpool Council had not decided
they were entitled to flood a Welsh valley, and then get backed by the English
Government, Wales would have continued to assimilate into English Society, by
now we would have just been an English region, the rest of the World thinks we
are just part of England. But flooding that valley was the final straw for most.

So WHY do 99% of us say "whoa, hang on mate, I'm Welsh, not English!!"

.... because we're proud of our HERITAGE.

The Welsh language is THE single-most important part of this heritage, because
its the one thing that North South East and West would NOT give up hundreds of
years ago. Its what defines us, and like it or not, it still does. The Welsh language
is a dogged, determined, stubborn, "come and have a go if you think your hard enough"
language... and guess what... its STILL here. And so are WELSH people!

Welsh people who are Anti-Welsh are still suffering from the remnants of Anti-Welsh
conditioning (and guess where that came from!!!!)

So as for 'letting it die' because its useless????

If (and it WONT happen now, thank God) the Welsh Language died...

Ten or twenty years later... So would Wales.

Because the Country would have NOTHING left to define it from our neighbours
apart from 'Butt', Boyo or "where too are you from"

What I deplore is the waste of taxpayers money sending you letters/pamplets in both languages. Simply ask people to sign up if they want it in welsh - if not send it in english - simples.

Re: What Is The Point Of The Welsh language?

I agree with the post made earlier that it should not be compulsory in schools as I feel it disadvantages my children when they could be learning a worldwide spoken language such as Spanish from an early age instead. I also think that in the future Russian or Mandarin will be far more important to them, but I fully concur that those who WANT to learn welsh should certainly be given the opportunity to do so.

Welsh speakers in my eyes view it as a club and use it to say they are more Welsh than everyone. Most Welsh speakers are bitter for some reason. It's a clique that I do not want to be part of at the moment, attitudes must change before the whole country adopts the language.

Agreed.

Re: What Is The Point Of The Welsh language?

If you want to learn the language then you can. I think that a basic grounding in Welsh is a positive thing for schools to provide and it should not bne allowed to drift into obscurity as a language. Personally I moved over from England and continued it to A-Level which was decent, although fecking difficult.

Re: What Is The Point Of The Welsh language?

I think Mandarin is the most spoken language in the world and not english.
I am a Welsh speaker and very proud that the language is growing, however if someone speaks to me in english then I will reply in english.

To be fair the basics are taught up until the age of 14 as any Welsh speakers have a higher chance of gaining a job today, than a Unilingual (possible made up word) person. After that it's up to the child whether they carry on or not.

Re: What Is The Point Of The Welsh language?

Tue Dec 04, 2012 12:26 pm

Far from being a dying language According to the 2001 census the number of Welsh speakers in Wales increased for the first time in over 100 years, with 20.5% in a population of over 2.9 million claiming fluency in Welsh. And also a further 28% of the population of Wales claimed to understand Welsh. Within Cardiff the census revealed that the increase was most significant in urban areas, such as Cardiff with an increase from 6.6% in 1991 to 10.9% in 2001.

Whilst not being heard on the street every day in South Wales it is of course a different story in large areas of Gwynedd and West Wales. Have you been to Caernarfon or Porthmadog its Welsh all the way for example. There are thousands of youngsters now who can speak Welsh due to the boom in Welsh medium schools. We are a way off admittly from the levels from 1891 census and 1901 when around half the population were fluent welsh speakers. But its remarkable that the language has survived. Indeed there is a chapter/verse in the Welsh anthem which states whilst our land and valleys etc have been captured our language will always remain free. Hear hear long may it continue. :ayatollah:

we once lived in mud huts, are you going to live in one to show your past identity. how about women wearing the old get up, maybe lacoste can knock one up.

how about riding a horse into England and shout for some freedom ffs.

the Welsh language is useless, and make you no more Welsh than someone who has no interest in it. Rugby is supposed to be our national sport, i hate it, does that mean i am not as Welsh as Dewi Evans from Porth

Concentrate on a better workforce and our tourism industry and make Wales a better place where people want to visit, because no one wants to visit because we speak a different language.

THIS.

Again, I have nothing against the Welsh language and if people choose to learn the language then fantastic!

But remember this, being Welsh is an accident of birth, you didn't choose to be born here. Don't get me wrong, I like being Welsh but I'm not proud of it.

Just like to clarify, I was born in Epsom, Surrey and lived in Wales for 17 years (most of my life) and I see myself as Welsh/British, even though I'm half Welsh/English.

its like latin in so much they dont have enough vocabulary to express themselves properly in the modern day

Actually the language has grown most in Cardiff than it has anywhere else in Wales however you are right. The somalians can't be bothered to learn English let alone Welsh which is a much harder language to grasp.
