Willy, I also grew up in that era as a kid. My fathers business closed due to the knock on effect of the mine closures. You were lucky to be able to move and get educated and jobs elsewhere, the truth is that's much harder when you've got a family, 3 kids and a house in Wales with negative equity.

Most people I know, on reflection, are happy that the pit wasn't the only option when we left school and college. I surely am although options were limited due to lack of investment into other industries. The pits were dangerous and took years off your life - in addition the world was moving away from coal based energy. No one disagrees that Wales needed to move on from an economy based on mining. However what Thatcher did was a disgrace, she didn't care about succession planning or migrating the industry from the pits to other more sustainable and cleaner industries. It was short sighted and she didn't care one bit for the common working class families who were affected by the closures. She was a lunatic who had forgotten her working class background and lost total empathy for the working man and woman.

To properly migrate from a mining based economy to an economy with more options should have taken 20 years of planning and investment.... Thatcher did nothing apart from close the pits and leave 1000's in poverty, as PROVED by your story about having to move yourself away from your friends and family. You did it but shouldn't have been forced to. 1000's of people didn't get the opportunities you did because they were not in a position to do so.

I'll be going to her funeral shortly, and jump on her grave. She was directly involved in ruining a lot of people's lives and those of us who went through that strike of 84/85 will NEVER forget.

When you talk about migrating away from coal mining, that's exactly what has happened in countries like Germany. The impact there as therefore been minimal. And we wonder why Germany are a much stronger country than we've got now.

When Thatcher turned to buying more expensive German coal, the German's themselves said it was economical madness. The reason why German coal was cheaper on the market was because it was subsidised from The European Union. Subsidies that British coal were entitled to but she turned down. Without any subsidies British coal was far more competitive.

The other lie Thatcher told was about available stocks. She led the public into thinking the pits were running dry. Penalta pit closed with at least 100 years supply left.

How much money has dropped out of the UK economy through the loss of coal exports and the cost of imports? Add to that the cost of importing gas which is at a higher price simply because we are now held to ransom.

Thatcher and her chums should be made to throw every penny they own back in to the UK economy so to go a small way to pay that back.
