I don't think so.
MM could have used other players and chose not to use them and rightly so the way fixtures are.

We also had 8? International players out.

We will never be put in a situation again this season with a game sat, tues, Friday and an international inbetween those games.

No it shows we have players out on international duty, and players needing rest for friday. What this does show, is that a team of predominantly under 20 year olds went out and played together for the first time, and didn't disgrace themselves.

As i said in this cup they seem to do well, what divine right do we have to win the game

As a previous poster has said. It was men versus boys tonight. I don't think that Malky would have wanted to lose since Boothroyd was his mentor in coaching. You played some ok stuff but far far too many unforced errors. Particularly your lil black winger who had a mare and left the ball behind when trying to dribble.

Clive Platt was an absolute monster tonight and dominated your box. Was a good performance from us.

Half of the kids out tonight are not even bench players imo, we had loads of players missing not worried by that at all tbh would prefer to play kids and go out than play our 1st team twice in 3 days and risk injury to some of them longer, it was a good learning curve and a reality check for some of the players tonight, mason has been injure mutch has only had 45 mins prior helguson is not a starter imo and also it could be put down to a bad day at the office, not worried by this at all and quite shocked you are tbh

Respect to Cardiff. Lil ol Northampton have knocked out the following in the League Cup in recent seasons. Liverpool, Bolton, Cardiff, Bolton, Reading, Brighton

A bit early to be questioning the strength of the squad. Below is a team and a half not involved tonight with potentially three more signings coming in.

1 GK David Marshall
2 DF Kevin McNaughton
3 DF Andrew Taylor
4 MF Filip Kiss
5 DF Mark Hudson
6 DF Ben Turner
7 MF Peter Whittingham
8 MF Don Cowie
9 FW Etien Velikonja
10 FW Robert Earnshaw
13 MF Kim Bo-Kyung
15 FW Rudy Gestede
17 MF Aron Gunnarrson
19 MF Kadeem Harris
23 DF Darcy Blake
39 FW Craig Bellamy

I personally think MM should have rested a few more. Shame we are out but if they want the cup treated with respect they need to sort out the fixtures.

I'm actually delighted that we've gone out.

It wasn't the clubs fault of the timing of the game, which was really poor. Malky used it as an extra pre-season for the youngsters.

The youngsters gained some great game time against a physical side and Helguson gets off the mark. I'm only disappointed that it didn't go to extra time to get the youngsters an extra 30 minutes. I think the experience will be great for the youngsters when called on in the future.

It's all about the league this season. Last year you could say we were rebuilding so the cup run was really an amazing bonus. This season anything other than promotion would be deemed a failure.

Actually Northamption have made some decent signings in the summer (for that league). Also Malky didn't pick the strongest side available, there were some first team players left out who were not on international duty.

Re: Very saddened by tonight's

Losing to Shrewsbury last season didn't do us much harm, sad to say it but the cups are an afterthought, and when people say the big clubs don't take the cups seriously, how come they keep winning them?

Re: Very saddened by tonight's

Wed Aug 15, 2012 8:38 am

The Football League have made a farce of the League Cup this season. They say they want teams taking it more seriously and then schedule it the same days as international friendlies? Idiots.

I'm glad we're out of it. I don't think the run last season helped us at all. It added another half a dozen games to our calendar and it's no coincidence that our form in and around the League Cup Final was shit.

This season is all about promotion. f**k the cups. They're not going anywhere.

Let's hope we start with a Win on Friday night. :ayatollah:

I'm absolutely gutted that we lost the game last night Annis because let's face it should have been a formality from the moment the draw was made. I won't accept the arguement that with international matches and our 1st league game on Friday making it impossible to field a stronger team, Why? Because we could have played this game last Saturday and with our squad it would have been a formality. We decided that playing a home friendly against Newcastle was more important than making progress in the league cup. Absolute bollocks in my opinion as not matter what people think we actually need the money that comes from a good cup run and that is now lost.

All this concentrate on the league is also bollocks in my opinion, remember Steve Kean last season when he said it was OK to forfiet their game against us because not getting relegated was more important :o I wonder if he will still be at Blackburn when we play them in the league. What about Steve Coppell resting his entire first team for a cup match against us a few years back to concentrate on promotion, they never got promoted either.

Someone at the club decided it was more important to play Newcastle last Saturday than play what would have been a formality against Northampton with our normal team. Couldn't have had anything to do with the shindig down the stadium Friday night and the new shirt going on sale. :? Could it.

Of all the youngsters who played last night, I thought Declan John at left back was by far the best and played some decent football. Showed some nice touches and seemed comfortable with the ball at his feet. Can see him coming off the bench to replace Taylor during the season and wouldn't look out of place.

O'Sullivan also looked ok. Looks a clever reader of the game with good awareness/vision and can pick a pass. Only negative is that he's too lightweight. Needs to bulk up a little. Good future ahead of him though.

On the negative (of which there were many) St Luce had an absolute mare and Nugent was completely out of his depth. Sainte Luce does look quick, but was not able to control the ball well enough, especially at pace. Nugent in fairness was up against 6'5 Clive Platt (ex-Coventry - who City's first team struggled to deal with last season) then the Akinfenwa later on.

Oshilaja at right back looked good for the first 45, but made too many errors especially in the 2nd half.
The same applied to Ralls. Was looking forward to seeing him play, but after a promising start he faded badly and contributed very little.

After reading some of the previous reports about Lewis (especially against Newcastle) I was hoping that we had someone who could serious challenge Marshall. Sorry, but he looked very unsure on crosses and especially against the long throws. For such a tall keeper, what is he 6'5? To be flustered on aerial balls resorting to punching or flapping the ball clear. He nearly punched one into his own net. That sums his performance up.

Finally, Conway... apart from the most comical freekick you'll ever see in your entire life, he always looked a class above the younger guys around him but although his control and trickery were good, the final result was absolutely nothing. I was praying he's at least attack the goal. Not once. In fact, considering the Cobblers had a 3rd choice 17 year old youth keeper playing, City were abysmal in not making him work hard enough. Sorry, I'll correct that... not making him work at all.

I don't mind losing. You can't win every game, I fully appreciate that. But what does leave a sour taste is that we never tested their young keeper. It was the nearest you could get to legally forfeiting a game.

Was good to meet a few Bluebirds in The Rover before the game. Thank God I could walk home in under 10 minutes. Long way back to Cardiff after that performance. Roll on Friday.

Yeah I agree with you but its still small, having said all that Blackpool & the JBs did it on a small squad.
