Welsh 'nationalism' is a syndrome; most frequently resulting from inferiority, spite, envy and political, social and historical ignorance of the highest order.

I'm not particularly a nationalist, but I am a Republican - the two can sometimes be confused, although I'm not against the Welsh Nationalists either.

I say I'm a Republican in the anti-monarchy sense, not as in the formation of a Welsh republic so to speak. Unfortunately I see absolutely nothing to be gained from Welsh independence and consequently find it difficult to take nationalists seriously. It's fueled by bitterness and spite.

I tend not to be that keen on the concept of nationalism generally (the last refuge of the soundrel and all that), but I am whole heartedly a republican, in that I believe that monarchy and hereditary privilege as a political system is just plain wrong.

I'd tend to think of myself as an internationalist.

I don't think this is true, as Owain Glyndwr in the 15th Century had a red dragon on a white background on his flag and Henry Tudor had the Welsh flag as we now know it at Bosworth - both before the Union flag was made after the union of Scotland and England (where it was only the Cross of St Andrew and the Cross of St Geaorge that made up the initial Union flag). The union flag was then changed to add in the Cross of St. Patrick later to become as we know it today.

This is the way I've always understood it, unless you can point to any evidence that contradicts that.

Actually Owain Glyndwr had a golden dragon on a white background when he laid seige to caernarfon castle in 1401 which was an english castle town at the time, you are correct about Henry Tudor, the first reference of a red dragon however is found in the poems of Aneurin which were written in 1265 and date back to 600ad the rid dhreic (old welsh for red dragon)

Just to let you know there wouldn't be a dragon on there anyway, if anything it would be a yellow cross as the flag is made up of the cross of the saint of each country, St George, St Andrew and St Patrick.

Cheers for that your are correct

Not so sure about that. That St David's cross we were using was only designed in about 1920, wasn't it?

Are you really that anti-English that you're happy to see your daughters relationship end? Or are annoyed to discover that she's with an Englishman? Very sad, sometimes nationality is an irrelevance.

Nurse? Nurse? NUUUURSE!? Give this man his meds.

Glad to hear your thrilled that your daughters relationship is over. I like to think you run a little test on all her boyfriends. Is he Welsh? Does he hate the English? Can he prove he hasn't got any English ancestors up to 500 years ago? Does he like leaks? Can he speak Welsh?

But then again you'd fail the last one wouldn't you, pathetic hypocrit.

No you are correct but I meant in a sense our flag was only introduced after the union jack

Yes, I've just checked it, and that does seem correct - nevetheless, all of this certainly points to the fact that we definitely had the dragon well before union flag was made up.

aah, I see what you meant now.

But that was because we were effectively taken over by England in the 13th Century and couldn't enforce our own flag, in the same way that other countirs taken over by the British Empire couldn't enforce a flag of their own either, until the end of the empire came about.
