Many of the reactions to my original posts are what I expected.
As a nation we have been ruled by a foreign power for 6 hundred years and in that time they have tried to eliminate us of the map. The 1536 act of union joined us up as 'part of England,' they have tried to kill off our language once spoken throughout Britain, our population has to move to look for work and our houses are to expensive for our local population allowing rich settlers to move in and yet we are sill here! That in itself is quite remakable.
Had our Welsh history been taught in schools I'm sure many opinions would be different. It wasn't, it was the history of the conquerer...and its still happening don't think that the weeks of torch carrying and jubilees just happened it was carefully planned to promote Britishness that is obviously crumbelling.

The language is dead, they came in, they brought schools and education that this country had never seen before and it cost the language. Big whoop.

Your xenophobia against "the ingerlish" is hilarious, grow up. Pitty our best player over the past 3 years is English eh

I totally understand your reaction, but please learn your history. Wales had had an excellent education system in the 18th century run by the churches, started by Rev Gruffydd Jones of Llanddowro. This system allowed nearly all the population of Wales to be literate in Welsh. Of course the English soon stopped this and brought us "schools and education this had never seen" as you say, but in a foreign language.
Actually we had an excellent education system centred araound the monastries in what the English call the 'dark ages' it certainly wasn't dark in Wales.

This is not anti-english xenophobia, it happened and it happened all over the world.

hey,
- the spanish put their flags up when they explored new territories and annected the land
- the british put their flags up when they discovered new territories and declared them part of the commonwealth and british colony
- the english put their flags up at every town-square where their nationalteam plays and they take over the place...
- the americans put a flag up when they landed on the moon and made it part of the US

therefore, we have every right to put down our towels to annect space for ourselves... :D

Hardly ruled? Wales has it's own Government, although precedent may be set by the UK Constitution and Parliament, Wales is fairly represented there. :?

Quick answer and history lesson! The English conquered Wales in 1282 and after a number of revolts Wales was joined on to England by Henry viii (who spoke Welsh by the way) in 1536. Britain comes from the Welsh Prydain the ancient name for these islands. Not sure where the 'great' came from, probably the Victorian colonialists. 'Great' certainly doesn't reflect the present state of our nations!
